Chapter Eleven

Amy pressed the cold peas to her face and nearly whimpered. That fucker who hit on her at the bar a few weeks ago clearly had an issue with rejection because her face was paying the ultimate price. He’d slapped her hard. Thankfully, before he did slap her, she’d gotten in a couple of punches of her own. This made him angry, which is why she ended up with a guard holding her captive, as he then slapped her twice around the face. Her face fucking hurt, like really bad. Stupid asshole.

She didn’t know what was going on out there, but she didn’t need Daniel to tell her that he was a Reaper. Now she knew Cyrus, Louis, and Hank were also Reapers.

Seconds passed, maybe even minutes. She didn’t look at the time. Finally, she looked up as the kitchen door opened, and Daniel stepped through. The door closed behind him, and she watched, waiting with bated breath.

He put his hands on his hips, and neither of them said a single word for a couple of minutes. The silence almost sounded deafening, at least to her.

“He’s not going to be a problem to you anymore,” Daniel said.

“I guess he was the cause of the bad deliveries? The sudden run of bad luck I was having?”

“Yes.”

She nodded her head. “Kind of nice to know there is someone responsible.”

Silence fell between them.

“Is this going to be a problem?” Daniel asked.

She looked toward him and knew exactly what he was talking about. Did she have an issue with him being a Reaper? She moved toward him, and when she was within touching distance, she reached out and put her hands on his chest, sliding them up and circling his neck.

“Is what going to be a problem?” she asked. She heard the tales Martha had told, and in the last few weeks she had experienced firsthand what it meant to have a Reaper by her side.

“I don’t see any of this being a problem to me, Daniel. In fact, I think there’s something I need to tell you.” She stopped and then went onto her tiptoes to press a kiss to his lips. She pulled away, cupped his face, and stared into his blue eyes. Eyes she knew she could easily get lost in. “I love you. I know we didn’t promise anything of each other, but I have loved you for a long time, Daniel Long, and I know I’m going to keep loving you.”

He slammed his lips down on hers, kissing her. Sinking his fingers into her hair, he held onto her tightly, and Amy wanted to be taken.

She didn’t care about what happened out there. The moment that man and his goons had stepped into her café, she’d been terrified and angry. Mostly terrified, but now she had Daniel, and she loved that he was a Reaper. Not only did he protect the town, he also protected her. And she loved him with all her might.

Suddenly, he pulled away and sunk down onto one knee before her.

“Daniel?”

“I was going to do this later tonight, but I don’t see a reason to wait.” He held a square velvet box within his grasp. “Amy Flynn, you are the love of my life, the woman I’ve been searching for, and there is no one else I want. I cannot guarantee you a perfect marriage, but I can guarantee I will work tirelessly to make you happy. All I want is you by my side for the rest of our lives. Will you please do me the honor of becoming my wife?”

“Yes.”

There was no hesitation.

“Also, I love you too,” Daniel said. “I’ve loved you for a long time.”

He took the ring out of the box, and Amy recognized it. It was one her mother had, and now it decorated her finger. She looked at it, and then at Daniel, taken aback.

“Yeah, your grandmother gave this to me. Told me to give it to you when the time came. Didn’t quite know what she meant, but now I do. She knew I loved you, even back then.”

Amy couldn’t believe how her night had gone from potentially being one of the worst to the best yet. She knew in years to come this night would be changed. There would be no rejected bastard, no Reapers, no damsel in distress.

It would just be her and Daniel.

Epilogue

Ten Years Later

“Tell me the story, Daddy. I want the story,” Tracey asked, not for the first time.

Daniel looked toward his wife, who was smiling.

Their engagement story was a fascination to their oldest daughter. Their son, Michael, wasn’t interested in anything other than playing football, which he was doing next to their picnic blanket. The fair was in full swing, and he and Amy were able to get away from the bar and the café to simply enjoy it.
