I dig deeper, looking for more articles, but so far there is nothing for me to find. All reports just say the same thing. The news is so new that there are no further details available. I’m confused and scared.

“Magnolia, what’s wrong?”

“Um…my former roommate was arrested.”

“Yes. She and that bastard brother of hers.”

“Does any of it have to do with me?”

He yawns and then answers, “Yes and no.”

“What does that mean?”

Killian sits up against our headboard. “I could have killed all of them, but I knew it could come back to me, so I went for his businesses. I thought it would be guns when I got to the docks, but instead I found two freight containers with young Asian women in there, so I decided to tip off the news. Then the authorities couldn’t lie about what I found.”

“You did that for me?”

“Yes. They came after my wife to destroy my chance at my father’s holdings,” he answers.

Chapter Seven

Killian

When Mike told me he was taking her to her apartment, I was annoyed. She lived in a rundown apartment according to the neighborhood. I was only minutes behind because there was no way in hell she would be safe. Something in my gut told me there was a bigger problem. The second she told me her roommate’s name, I knew she’d been played. Something didn’t add up and I wanted their heads.

Sending my right hand man, Joey a message, he pulled some strings and did some digging as I flew to my girl. She’d been upset and needed comforting, but unfortunately, getting rid of our enemies held a greater importance. By the time I had the details of what they had planned for my sensual yet innocent wife, I needed to seek my revenge.

I have to get out of town before I burn down everything Mendez has and kill everyone in his family. Sandra Mendez had sent my wife to that auction to get a large sum of money, and then when Magnolia returned with it, they had every intention of kidnapping her, stealing it, and then trafficking her off. That’s why the apartment had been cleared. Magnolia has no idea that she’s already been unenrolled in college, citing that she was having too hard of a time and couldn’t handle it. No one here would have looked for her. Her parents would have no idea what happened to her.

The weather isn’t any better than New York, and the wind is nearly just as brutal. Over two feet of snow had fallen a week earlier, so there were mounds everywhere, but the roads were clear to her parents’ ranch. I didn’t bring my entire security team, but I have several of my men who will be staying on the property with us. They have enough room for three other guests.

“So this is where you live,” I say, watching her grow more and more nervous the closer we get to our destination.

She turns to me with wide eyes and a blush on her face. “Um, yeah. It’s nothing like you’re used to,” she confesses. I hadn’t expected it to be, but I find that she’s nothing I expected. From the moment I locked eyes on her at the auction, I’d made up my mind that she was mine, and there wasn’t a soul that could tell me otherwise because my body and mind knew damn well what the truth was before I could even say it.

“I’m sure it will be fine, love.” I bring her hand to my lips and kiss it. “You’re worrying too much.”

“Well, it’s easy for you to say. If someone disagrees with you, you kill them.” She freezes and stares at me for a moment before pleading, “Please don’t do that here.”

“Of course not,” I say. Not her family, at least. Everyone else might be subject to meeting their maker. Then again, it’s the holiday season, so I might be generous. She gives me a side eye just as we pull into the driveway. “What? I’m serious. I won’t harm your family, even if they deserve it.”

“Thank you.” She kisses my cheek, and it takes all my willpower to stop from turning my head and claiming her lips, but then I see a man in a Carhart coat and jeans staring straight at us.

I tilt my head toward him and say, “I’m guessing that’s your father.”

“Oh God.”

I chuckle and say, “Relax, beautiful. Come on. I doubt he saw the innocent peck through the window. We’re in the backseat.” My driver opens the door, and I step out of the backseat and then take Magnolia’s hand.

“Maggie Pie, you’re home.” His brutal grimace turns into a smile as soon as he sees her face. I knew he couldn’t see her through our tints.

“Daddy,” she says, running up to him for a big hug. My men are on alert just in case there’s any trouble, but they have been warned that her family is off limits.
