I try to swallow back the lump in my throat. “But he’s going to come out of this, right?”
“The longer he’s in a coma, the more chance he has of developing complications. We’ll continue to monitor him. But I won’t be bringing him out of his induced state just yet.” He looks me in the eyes and I see the fearful reality in them. “Your husband might not wake up, Mrs. Vale. You still need to be prepared for that.”
He leaves, and a stunned silence lingers in his wake.
My blood roars in my ears, and my heart pounds violently against my ribs.
Beast has to live. I can’t bear the thought of him dying.
“If what he’s says is true—” Axe starts to talk but I stop him with a blazing glare.
Shaken by what I’ve just heard, I walk over to Axe and look up at him. “That is your president in there and he is not going to die. Do you hear me?” I look to each of the bikers standing around me. “And I won’t hear any talk about him not waking up. Not here. Not with Beast on the other side of that wall. Have more faith in your president, or I swear to God I will punch you in the dick.”
Shaking, I leave the gob-smacked bikers and return to Beast’s room where I take my husband’s hand and quietly sit with him again.
Two days later, Beast finally opens his eyes.
CHAPTER 64
BELLE
“You heard what the doctor said, you have to take it easy,” I remind Beast as he helps me onto the back of his bike.
“I’ve been taking it easy for weeks, little one. Two of them unconscious. Another two under your watchful eye, doing exactly what you tell me to do. But if you think I’m missing this, then you’re crazy.”
I could protest, but this is happening whether I like it or not.
And if he’s going, then I’m going.
“Fine, but ride safely.”
He chuckles. “Baby, ain’t nothin’ going to happen to me when I’ve got you behind me.”
We ride to the outskirts of town. It’s near dusk when we make it to the street where Mayor Boney lives. We park a little ways up the road and wait.
The sheriff and his deputies are already there.
As we wait, I wrap my arms around my husband and feel so happy he’s strong again. I rest my head against his shoulders and smile.
A month ago, I almost lost him and even just thinking about it now makes my heart ache. But since coming home from the hospital, he’s grown strong and healthy again.
I tighten my arms around his waist, breathing in his scent and his warmth, and feel my heart bloom with love.
When I feel him tense, I look up to see the sheriff leading Mayor Boney down his driveway toward one of the patrol cars. Boney is cuffed and beet red, screaming to everyone how he’ll have their jobs. Not that anyone is listening. Which makes him scream louder and froth with rage. And when the sheriff places his hand on his head to ease him into the patrol car, Boney tries to bite him.
Like a rabid dog.
Once he’s inside the patrol car, Sheriff Coulter walks down the road to where we are watching.
“Thanks for letting us know this was happening,” Beast says.
Sheriff Coulter removes his hat. “Well, I thought you’d earned a front row seat after everything he’s done to you and the club.”
“What’s he being charged with?”
“The DA is putting a list of charges together ranging from drug trafficking to manufacturing. He’s going to do some serious time.”
“And the Unhinged Psychos?” Beast asks.
“SWAT hit them this morning. They’re facing serious time. There won’t be a club left after we’ve finished with them.”
Beast nods. I know he would’ve preferred to destroy the Unhinged Psychos the MC way. But considering the lives they’re saving doing it this way, he’s okay involving the authorities this time.
“There’s something else you should know,” the sheriff says. “A human femur washed up on the beach and was found by a dog walker while you were in hospital. The DNA has just come back. It’s Dodger. Your father is dead, Beast.”
“I know.” He flicks the ignition and his Harley rumbles to life. “At least now we can all move on.”
Not hanging around any longer, Beast kicks the Harley into gear, and we ride off into the night.
CHAPTER 65
BEAST
A few days later
Because life is short and very rarely makes any sense, we decide to create a moment that makes all the sense in the world to us.
We retake our marriage vows.
But this time it’s an intimate affair.
Just the two of us and Priest, who is officiating.
It’s a stark difference to our original wedding when everyone in the club was present, and I was forcing Belle to marry me.
