Carver stood well back, and little Mischa had on a pair of earmuffs, so the gunshots wouldn’t hurt her ears.
Her mother was determined to keep learning to shoot. He had to admit, it was shocking that she couldn’t get the same hit she had gotten a year ago when she took Romone out.
She hadn’t needed those skills again. Andy had replaced the gate with a tougher, thicker iron one, as he didn’t want to be taken by surprise.
Roxy came running toward them, nipping at her mother’s ankles.
A now fully healed Andy, as well as Flora, joined them. Andy carried a tray of steaming cups.
“August asked how it was going,” Andy said.
Carver couldn’t believe Morgan had been able to turn the people he helped into a family. Even Flora was happy to grant him a smile. For many years, he’d gotten nods or random grunts. Now, he was gifted with a smile and even a hello. It had freaked him out at first, but now he was used to it.
“Same,” Carver said.
Everyone back at the house was interested to know how Morgan, one of the worst shots in the whole house, possibly the whole state, had been able to get that shot. Romone hadn’t been an easy target, and seeing as Carver had been used as a shield, there was less of the other man to get.
Carver had faith in her. He knew she would shoot to kill, even if that meant he had to take a bullet to make it happen.
Carver looked at his annoyed wife and held out his arms, which she stepped into without a single hesitation. His wife was able to make that shot because to her something precious was at stake. He was at stake, and she didn’t want him to die.
He knew his wife loved him. Morgan had given him a reason to live.
To everyone else, he was a beast, and the main role in their horror story, but to Morgan, he was her hero.
The truth was he loved her, intended to protect her, and make sure no harm ever came to her again.
She belonged to him, he belonged to her, and that was final.
The End
