I was almost out the door before a thought hit me. “Hey these friends of yours. Are any of them guys?” I sounded like a jealous ass. But it was better to get this shit outta the way than to have to slug some kid somewhere down the line.
“Nope, dad wasn’t big on guy friends either.” On that note.
Chapter 14
STONE
***
"So who’re we meeting with boss?”
“I set something up with Cisco.”
“Oh that’s good. Word is he’s not too fond of Sanchez.”
“Are we sure he’s the right guy? He rose up in the ranks pretty quick over there, some of the old guys might harbor some resentment.”
“I thought about all that. That’s why he’s the best choice. He’s an outsider first off, but he has the respect of the crew. They’d side with him sooner than Sanchez, so they’ll hear what he has to say. Besides he had Drexel’s ear. I talked to this guy and he’s willing to hear what we have to say. The objective here is to avoid a war. The town can’t handle another one of those shit.” Plus I had one more ace up my sleeve that I was holding close to my vest.
“Okay boss, let’s go meet the others and do this thing. The sooner the better.” The meet was set for the park. A neutral place in between the two clubs.
The night was clear just going dark. There was no traffic this time of night. Most people were behind doors in front of the tube. This meant the sound of fifty bikes heading down the street was going to have a lot of curtains flicking.
I’d decided to leave a few more guys back at the clubhouse just in case. That no trust thing again. We got there before the others and I sent a handpicked team out to the perimeter just in case.
It wasn’t long before we heard the engines of the Jokers heading our way and my boys started shifting. “Everybody stay cool.” This was the first time the two crews were meeting like this. All our dealings in the past were unplanned and a whole lot less civil.
I leaned back on my ride and watched them roll in and dismount. “Stone.”
“Cisco.” We didn’t do anything as cheesy as shake hands, just a few nods of recognition.
“You asked for this meet what’s up?”
“I’m sure you all know by now that Drexel’s kid is with me.”
“Yeah we know, what we don’t know is why.”
“I’ll get to that. First let me ask, how much do you know about what happened to your leader?”
“We’re still trying to figure that one out. The obvious choice was you, but that fell through and after a week of searching we still aren’t any closer to an answer. Why? You know something?”
“Okay, you asked why the kid was with me. Here, I think this should answer your question.” I handed him the letter she’d given me that first day.
“Is this legit?”
“Yep, she gave that to me along with a text from her old man that told her if anything happened to him to come find me.”
“What do you have there Cisco?” He looked at me before turning to his guys and holding out the letter. It was passed around amidst a lot of grumbling and ‘I knew its’.
“So what does this mean?”
“There’s also this.” I passed him a copy of the will and waited for them to pass that around.
“Where’d you get this?”
“His lawyer.”
“Damn, that asshole Sanchez, I knew he had something to do with this shit. Did you see how obsessed he is with getting little Chloe back? I don’t know how this shit is gonna turn out but at least I’m glad the old man didn’t leave the MC to that fuck.”
The men all had something to say about that. My boys and I just listened and held our peace. “What the fuck boss, what was that letter?” Danny whispered in my ear.
“I’ll tell you later.”
“So what does this mean for us Stone?” The thing about this was that the Jokers were made up of followers. Drexel was such an insecure fuck he’d only surrounded himself with low-level thugs who wouldn’t know their way out of a paper bag.
I couldn’t have planned the shit better myself but it was never high on my list of things to do. “The Jokers are done. Drexel was a poor leader and an even worse businessman. Those of you who want to join Chaos will have to go through the same training as my men. I have no beef with any of you, whatever feud existed in the past died with Drexel. You boys are gonna have to decided what it is that you want.”
“Are you going to marry her?”
“Looks like it.”
“You understand Stone we have to talk this over. There’s a lot at stake here.”
