As soon as the leggings were also in place, he patted the loveseat. “Can you curl up here for me, Cherry?”
She eased onto her side and set her head on the small pillow he provided, not wanting to put pressure on her sore bottom. At least there was no risk of that. The loveseat didn’t give her enough space to stretch out on her back.
Daddy covered her with a throw blanket and then kissed her temple. “Rest, Cherry. Daddy is going to work out and then shower. When I get back, we’ll talk about what you want to do next.”
“Okay.” She was surprised at how tired she was. She really needed this nap. Her brain had been on overload all day. It was barely noon.
Chapter Sixteen
It felt like only moments later that the door to Davis’s office opened and he stepped back inside.
Sue was confused as she blinked her eyes open. He was dressed in different clothes and his hair was wet, suggesting he’d had a shower. He was also carrying a tray of food and drinks.
He smiled at her as he set everything on his desk. “Did I wake you, Little girl?”
She frowned as she slowly sat up. “How long were you gone?”
“About an hour and fifteen minutes. I guess you slept the entire time.” He came to her, lifted her off the seat and slid under her, resettling her on his lap.
She rubbed her sleepy eyes. “I can’t believe I slept like that.”
“See? Daddy knew you needed a nap. Maybe next time you won’t argue with Daddy?”
“I won’t for sure,” she assured him. Her stomach grumbled.
He poked her in the belly, making her giggle. “Someone’s hungry. Good thing I got us some lunch.”
She glanced at the desk. “Did you get it from that café a few doors down from Little Cakes?” She recognized the logo on the cups. Nibbles & Bites.
“I sure did. Have you eaten there before?”
She nodded. “It’s kind of expensive, so I don’t go there often, but Ellie’s Daddy, Garrett, got me a salad from there a few days ago when I was hungry.”
Davis smiled. “Garrett is a very thoughtful Daddy. Good thing I didn’t get you a salad this time. You wouldn’t want to eat the same thing.”
“What did you get me?” she asked, suddenly starving.
He lifted her to her feet and guided her to sit on a chair behind his desk. “I got two kinds of sandwiches. You can choose one and I’ll eat the other.”
She winced as she spotted the cupcake box.
Daddy sat in the chair next to her and pushed it back. “We’ll eat the cupcakes after we eat a healthy lunch.”
She pursed her lips, feeling bad all over again for defying him.
He reached for her chin and tipped her face back. “No need to fret about earlier. That slate is wiped clean. When Daddy punishes you for being naughty, that erases the defiant behavior. Poof. It’s gone.”
She smiled as he said poof. “Does it really work that way?”
He nodded. “Absolutely. Now, which sandwich do you prefer?” He held out both of them. “Turkey and provolone or pastrami on rye.”
“Mmm. Those both sound good.” Her mouth was watering. “I don’t think I can choose. You pick, Daddy.”
He chuckled as he opened both and cut them in half. “We’ll each eat half of both. How’s that sound?”
“Perfect.” She reached for one and took a big bite, moaning around the flavors.
“They have amazing flavored teas with no added sugar too. I got peach and raspberry. Which do you prefer?” he asked next.
She thought for a moment. “Peach.”
He slid one cup toward her, and they ate in companionable silence for a few minutes, both of them so hungry after the antics of the morning.
After Daddy cleaned up from the sandwiches, he opened the cupcakes. “These really are the best flavor cupcake I’ve ever had,” he announced as he took a huge bite of his.
She lifted hers and bit into it too. She moaned around the flavors. “I agree.”
“What shall we do for the rest of the day? I was thinking we could go back to my house and watch a movie and snuggle together. How does that sound?”
“You aren’t tired of me yet? We’ve been together for almost an entire day.”
He wiped the crumbs from his last bite of cupcake off his lips and leaned in to kiss her. “Haven’t you figured out that I’ll never get tired of you, Cherry?”
She dragged her teeth over her lower lip. “That’s hard to imagine, Daddy,” she murmured. “I know you keep saying it, but I’m scared to believe you. What if you change your mind and I get hurt?”
“Daddy is not going to change his mind.”
Troy did.
“I know what you’re thinking, Cherry. I can read it on your face. I’m not Troy. He wasn’t right for you. He probably spent years struggling to pretend he was someone he was not. Eventually, he couldn’t contain it anymore. I bet when he met Viola, and she turned out to be the perfect Mommy for him, he couldn’t lie to himself any longer. I’m a Daddy, Sue. Through and through. And you’re my Little girl. Do you have doubts about being Little?”
