After covering her with a soft blanket, he stuck Barbie in her arms and kissed her forehead. “The diaper is very absorbent, Cherry. Don’t worry about wetting it in the night. Some Little girls find they can sleep much deeper when they don’t have to worry about being aware of their bladder and getting up to go potty.”

She shivered as he gave her one last kiss and then turned and left the room.

She was so comfortable and so tired, she easily fell asleep, the slats of the crib giving her a sense of security and peace.

Chapter Twenty

“How was your day off?” Ellie asked when Sue arrived at Little Cakes two days later, refreshed and ready to take on the world.

“It was amazing.” She knew she was grinning from ear to ear. She’d spent most of yesterday packing her house, picking out which things she wanted to keep and what she wanted to sell or donate.

The decision to move should have been stressful, but it wasn’t. Sue knew in her heart it was the right thing to do. Maybe her relationship with Davis had happened fast, but she’d never been more sure of anything in her life.

“You’re glowing,” Riley said as she came in from the back.

“Isn’t she?” Ellie agreed.

“I’m so glad you found the right Daddy,” Riley said as she gave Sue a hug before tying her apron around her waist.

The bell on the door jingled, making all three of them glance that way. The door was still locked, but whoever was trying to open it was shaking it so hard the bell went off anyway.

“Good grief,” Ellie commented. “Can’t they read the sign? We’re not open yet.”

Sue blinked several times as she stared at the frustrated woman outside. She couldn’t believe her eyes. What was Elizabeth doing here? Couldn’t that woman take a hint? Did they need a billboard?

“Do you know her?” Riley asked.

“Yeah. Unfortunately.”

“What’s going on out here?” Bear’s voice boomed as he stepped from the back room.

“I’ll handle it,” Sue said as she took a deep breath, pulled her shoulders back, and strode to unlock the door.

When she pulled it open, Elizabeth nearly fell into the shop. She had to catch herself to keep from falling on her knees. “Bitch,” she muttered. She glared at Sue as she adjusted her skirt before smoothing a hand down her hair.

“Can I help you with something?” Sue said, not letting Elizabeth see her nerves.

“Yes. As a matter of fact, you can. Stop seeing Davis Irving. You know you’re nowhere near his league. He’s like an eleven, and you’re…” She sneered as she let her gaze roam up and down Sue’s frame. “A two. He probably feels sorry for you. I, on the other hand, had a relationship with him before you came in batting your eyes and trying to play in a game that’s way too advanced for you.”

“Ah. I see. Well, I’m the one sleeping in his bed and moving into his house. So, if we were playing a game, I’d say I won.”

Elizabeth’s face turned beet red. “There is no way he’s fucking you.”

Sue lifted both brows and shrugged. It didn’t really matter whether or not Elizabeth believed her.

“Lady…” The booming voice coming from behind Sue belonged to Bear. Sue almost felt sorry for Elizabeth. “I don’t know who you are, but no one talks to the people I care about like that. I suggest you move along and find someone else to harass. You’re not welcome here.”

Elizabeth looked slightly rattled. She even licked her lips. Bear wasn’t a small man. And his voice packed a punch.

Riley and Ellie were standing behind him. Both of them looked like they might attack this crazy woman at any second. Thank goodness they’d all taken some self-defense classes a while back. Sue at least had a few moves she could use if Elizabeth got physical with her.

Shockingly, Elizabeth ignored Bear’s warning and shifted her attention back to Sue. “What will it take?” She opened her purse and pulled out a wad of cash before flicking through the hundreds and jerking five of them off the stack.

Sue couldn’t believe it. Did this crazy woman think she could buy Davis? Even if Sue disappeared from the face of the earth, Davis would never fall for someone as fake as Elizabeth.

“Five hundred dollars?” Sue laughed. “Davis is worth a thousand times more than that, and I don’t care if you’re the richest woman in the world. I’m not taking a bribe to give up my man.” She pointed at the street. “Like Davis told you when you barged into his house, get out of here. If I see you anywhere near me again, I will call the police and file a restraining order.”

“Too late,” Bear growled.

Suddenly, a shadow loomed behind Elizabeth and Sue lifted her gaze to find both Davis and two police officers approaching. She recognized the officers from occasional visits to Little Cakes as well as Blaze. She’d met them both at the club.
