He scrubbed his hands down his face and took an audible breath. When he was done probably silently cursing himself out for his knee-jerk reaction, he dropped his hands and muttered a, “Fuck.”
“Now they’re all out there wondering what needs to stay private between us. Good job, Captain Obvious.”
He growled out another, “Fuck.”
“Anyway, the whole reason I stopped by was to thank you for what you did for Teddy.”
“Your brother already thanked me.”
“I’m not my brother and Teddy is a big part of our family. I appreciate whatever you did to stop whatever was happening. Teddy hasn’t shared many of the details and my only thought about why is that he’s trying to protect you for whatever reason.”
Probably because Rook had gotten physical with the men who had harassed Teddy. He probably wouldn’t have gotten in any trouble for it, but Rook wasn’t one to trust law enforcement. And he was on parole.
“He don’t need to protect me.”
“No, but you protected him. And unlike you, I like to thank the people who help me or my family get out of harm’s way.” She gave him a look that reminded him of how she saved his ass without a simple thank you in return. His mouth tightened. “One thing he did say was you told those assholes you were gay, too.”
Rook didn’t bother to confirm or deny it.
“You had mentioned that you and Dodge were close and made it sound like you two kept each other company during those long and lonely nights when you did time together.”
“Yeah. And?”
“Did you and Dodge…”
“Prison’s a lot like Vegas. What happens in prison, stays in prison. Only difference, the slots don’t pay out the same.”
She rolled her lips under for a second before asking, “Does that mean you’re bi?”
She was asking a question she had no right to know but she was curious and he didn’t have to answer. He could simply tell her to “fuck off” like he normally did. He wasn’t shy about telling her where to go or how much he hated her. She also couldn’t deny she enjoyed busting his balls, the direction this conversation was currently taking.
“Ain’t bi. Love pussy. Love stickin’ my dick in cunt that’s soft and wet and has tits attached. Ain’t into a hairy shit canal with a dick attached.”
Jet shut her gaping jaw and rolled her lips under again, trying not to show her amusement of how bent out of shape he got over her question. She did her best to school that amusement from her voice. “So, just to be clear, you weren’t gay for the stay while in prison?”
He snorted. “Didn’t say that.”
She grinned and shoved his shoulder. “Really?”
He grimaced. “Didn’t give or take dick while inside.”
“There are other ways for two people to get off. Do you need a list?” she teased.
“Got my own list, fuck you very much.”
“Anyway, nothing wrong with being bi. Or even gay. And since both Teddy and Adam are gay, I’m glad you don’t have a problem with it.”
“Got a problem with the badge your brother wears, not who he fucks.”
“Good.”
His brow dropped low. “Why the fuck do you care if I did, anyway? Shouldn’t matter to you if I’m a huge homophobe.”
She shrugged one shoulder. “Nobody likes a homophobe.”
His eyebrows rose. “Other homophobes do.” He sighed. “That all you stopped by for?”
“Yes. That was the only reason.”
“Said your piece.”
“I did.”
“Then, you have a good fuckin’ day, Officer Bryson. Make sure to leave the dog on your way out.” He barreled out of the office, leaving her where she stood.
Jet lifted the dog until they were eye to eye. “Your daddy’s a complete asshole, do you know that?”
Cujo gave a little woof and a sneeze.
Yes, that was why the dog had picked Rook.
Birds of a feather…
Rook was fucking pissed.
So fucking pissed.
Not at Jet. At himself.
For fuck’s sake, at her, too.
For showing up today at the garage, just when he thought he was finally getting her out of his thoughts. But fuck no, she had to waltz right into his place of work to thank him for saving Teddy’s ass.
It almost made him regret doing it.
He grimaced. Christ, he would’ve done it no matter what. Teddy didn’t deserve the treatment those drunks gave him, and Rook would save his ass whether he was married to a pig or not.
He’d managed to avoid her since the last time he broke into her apartment and fucked her in her bed. In front of those large mirrors.
He closed his eyes and pictured it all over again.
Why the fuck couldn’t he quit her?
But no, her standing there in her jeans and tan leather jacket that emphasized her slender curves, with her black hair loose around her shoulders and those fucking big blue eyes. And that knit cap she was wearing that made her look…
