Mateo didn’t shift his fingers until she forced herself to follow his instructions. As she eased her muscles, he gently rubbed the lubricant over the interior walls until she squirmed in reaction to the tantalizing feel. “That’s my good girl.”
She felt empty when his fingers glided from her. Nora watched him pick up the thick thermometer. A few seconds later, the cold tip poked inside and he pressed the instrument deep inside her.
“It’s cold!” she said with a shiver.
“I’m sorry, Angel. Your bottom will warm it up. Hopefully not too much or I’ll have to give you some medicine.”
“Medicine?”
“Doctors for Little patients recommend a liquid fever reducer. I have some just in case. Your bottom absorbs it easily.”
“You’re going to put medicine in my bottom?”
“If you need it. I’ll order some daily vitamin suppositories for you. You’re around so many people—I want to make sure your immune system is as fine-tuned as possible,” he said as he twisted and gently pressed the thermometer further inside.
“I could just take the vitamins I swallow with water,” she assured him in a rush.
“These will work even better,” he promised.
“How long does it have to stay inside?”
“Just ten minutes. Let me tell you about the customer that walked in today who demanded a hotdog.”
“In a Cuban restaurant?”
“Yes. She’d had a Cuban hotdog at an amusement park and had come in specifically to have another. The waitress tried to dissuade her but finally had her describe it. It turned out she wanted something like a pressed Cuban sandwich with a pickle, mustard, Swiss cheese, and ham.”
“How did Guille react when the server went back to the kitchen to ask him?”
“Guille luckily had some hotdogs in the back for kids who come in with their parents. He created two pressed hotdogs and sent one out with the waitress for the eager customer.”
“Two? Why?” Nora asked, baffled.
“He wanted to try it. Guille cut it into several pieces and called me, my brother, my mom, and a cousin into the kitchen to try the creation.”
“Was it good?”
“Delicious. I know now why she wanted to have another one. Guille is adding it to the menu.”
“Now, I want one,” Nora said.
“I’ll make you one for dinner,” Mateo promised.
He checked his watch and slid the thermometer from her bottom. “Look at that. My Little girl is just below the fever line. I’m so glad.” Mateo leaned over to kiss her gently before cleaning up the oversized instrument and returning it to the case. When it was tucked in the drawer, he cleaned the lubricant from her bottom and wrapped her in a diaper.
“We don’t want the slippery stuff to get on your pretty underwear,” he explained.
In just a few minutes, Nora sat in an oversized T-shirt and slippers at the island in the kitchen as Mateo threw together a Cuban hotdog for her to try. She hadn’t even finished her glass of milk when he carried the plates over to the table.
“That smells so good,” she praised as she shifted to the table.
“I hope it tastes just as good. Dig in. Tell me what you think?”
She took a big bite and moaned her delight. “This is so good,” she said, mumbling around the bite in her mouth.
“No talking with your mouth full. But I understand. This is pretty amazing.”
“Can I have two?”
“You can have three if you wish. I know you’re hungry.”
“Make me one of these for lunch tomorrow and I’ll take a break,” Nora said before batting her eyelashes at him as she took another bite.
“Deal.”
Chapter Twelve
On Monday morning, Nora was in the process of stowing her lunch in the refrigerator in the back of her store when she saw something out of the corner of her eye. Something stuck out of the control box’s recently fixed door. Walking closer, she discovered there were two twenty-dollar bills tucked into the metal container.
Nora shook her head. Daddy. He must have put that in there when she wouldn’t take his money for the stickers and chart the other night. She plucked them out of there and tucked them into her pocket so they could talk about it later. She could get those things for cost. That was way too much money and he didn’t need to give her anything.
Shaking her head, she planned to talk to him that evening. Going on about her day’s tasks, Nora noticed that all the markers strategically placed by the adult coloring books had been replaced by colored pencils. That was actually a good idea. Nora decided to leave them there.
But where had the colored pencils come from? Someone had to move them to this new spot, so logically there would be a blank spot somewhere else. She made a circle around the displays where markers and colored pencils were. There were no obvious empty spaces on the hooks. Nora pulled out her phone to make a note to herself to talk to her employees when they reported for duty. Someone would know.
