Once I feel confident she’s not going to make a break for it, I begin to work on other matters concerning the facility while I keep an eye on her at the same time. I keep glancing back and forth between computer screens constantly, and I quickly realize I’m not getting much work done. I give up and lean back in my chair, stroking my jaw in thought as I take in the sight of my princess.
She must’ve sat at the edge of the pool with her feet dangling in the water for about fifteen minutes before she got up and headed back inside. I watch as she slowly wanders through the house alone and unattended.
I imagine she’s most likely bored, because I don’t see her eyes dancing with curiosity like I have in the past. The solemn look in her eyes and the slow shuffle in her steps tells me she’s still struggling mentally.
I shake my head in disdain. The bastard. I honestly never knew he was wacked in the head, and he should have never told her that he murdered her entire family. Some things are better left unsaid. I’ve watched her far too long to know when something is amiss, and something has definitely split and twisted inside her psyche. If I don’t see that sparkle back in her eyes soon, I will personally break Lance’s neck with my own two hands. Mark my words: he will pay for taking a piece of her soul and marring it, whether she bounces back or not. I haven’t decided yet how I’m going to handle that situation, but there’s plenty of time to figure it out. In the meantime, I’ll make sure I’m ten times the family she ever had, or will ever need.
I tap my forefinger on my lips in deep thought. I didn’t think it odd when Lance noticed the way I looked at Julianna after I saw her for the first time. He was able to pick up on it immediately, as any parent should. I thought he was going to ream me out and threaten to cut off my dick, but instead, he gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse. At the time, I figured if he was willing to give her up the way he did, he didn’t deserve her. I lost a shitload of respect for him that day, but obviously, he had two things I wanted very badly.
At the time, Blyss was on the brink of becoming something, and I needed investors. I heard through the grapevine that Lance Oakley was my man, and apparently, he was indeed.
I suppose I was so thick with greed and blinded by lust for her I didn’t stop to consider the many facets of his motives. Maybe because I’m just as fucked up in the head as he is, but at least I love her, something he would know nothing about.
I shake myself from my daze, noticing she’s settled into the library. It’s a room I had made specifically for her, because I know how much she loves to read books. I have a small fortune wrapped up in all the hardbacks.
She begins exploring the multitude of books on the shelves as she runs her fingertips randomly along some of the spines, but she surprises me when she doesn’t pick one up out of interest. Soon, she gives up and ventures down the hallway.
When she comes across a closed door, she stops to try the handle. “That’s right, sweetheart. It’s locked,” I say aloud to no one. That’s the door to my playground.
I remembered the promise I made to myself, that if I were to ever get her back, I would try to win her over, come at her from a completely different angle, and I refuse to lose my temper again. I don’t plan on showing her that room anytime soon, but once she gets acclimated here, and with the continued dosages of Blyss, I have no doubt she will be begging to get into my kink soon enough.
I perch on the edge of my seat, giving her my full attention on the monitor in anticipation when she stops outside my office door. I’ve already shown her my office, making sure she knows where I might keep important papers and electronics. She saunters slowly into the room, her light golden hair shimmering against the natural sunlight streaming in through the windows. I’ve only locked but a few drawers, and purposely left the majority of them open to see if she’ll rummage through them and snoop. Again, she surprises me and does none of that. She doesn’t even give pause to stare at the laptop I left out. She settles herself in my leather chair, sitting behind my desk, looking sweet and innocent.
My heart pounds against my chest when she stares longingly at my office phone. I pull up the computer program that can cut her off from the outside world with the click of a mouse as I wait in suspense as to what she’s going to do. She used to be so predictable, but now I’m not so sure. She bites at her thumbnail as she contemplates something in that brain of hers.
