“You can’t keep burying your head in the sand.”

“I’m not burying anything.” He stepped out of the room. “Dinner is in five minutes. Don’t be late.”

He walked down to the kitchen where Verity was bent forward looking into the oven at his pie.

“Is it burning?” he asked, reaching for her hips, unable to resist nestling his cock right against her ass.

Verity lifted up, shaking her head. “That is not happening. Not while your friend is here.”

“Oh, come on, we’re all adults.”

“Exactly. We’re all adults, which means we will act like it, and that means no sex.”

He groaned, cupping her face and tilting her head back. “Do I at least get a kiss?”

In response, Verity lightly brushed her lips across his. A very delicate kiss, and he shook his head.

“You know I love Sean like a brother, right?”

“I guess.”

“Yeah, well, now I want to kick that brother’s ass right out of my house.”

Verity placed her hand on his chest and rubbed back and forth, tutting. “Down, big boy.”

He wanted to argue some more, but his pain-in-the-ass best friend chose that moment to come right on down.

“All unpacked already?” he asked.

“You know me, I like to travel light. Something smells good. I’m starving.”

“Verity, babe, will you go and take Sean to the dinner table? I’ll be right on through.”

“Absolutely, but don’t ever call me babe.” She patted his chest, and he watched her ass as she left the room. He really did love her ass.

Opening the stove, he stepped back a little to allow the heat to escape and grabbed the pie he’d made.

He didn’t know what Sean’s obsession with pie was, but it was the one meal he was always eating. He had to wonder if it helped him think of home. Sean’s mother was always baking and cooking. Her life was spent at the stove, but not for any other reason than that she loved it.

With the pie in hand, he carried it on through to the dining table. Verity had already put down a heat-proof mat, so he placed it right on top.

He disappeared to grab the potatoes and the few vegetables he’d prepared.

Verity was laughing at something Sean had said as he entered. Jealousy spiked through his chest, and he didn’t like that feeling, just like he didn’t enjoy sharing his time with Verity.

Dinner was delicious, as Verity knew it would be. She’d been present the entire time Hector was cooking. He wasn’t a natural, but he followed directions very well. It was nice to see him with his friend. Sean was a lot of fun, and of course he had a lot of stories to tell about the disaster of their start-up company, and how they pretty much hit rock bottom before finally finding their footing in the world.

Life hadn’t been easy for Hector.

She got it, understood it more than most.

The one thing she had learned so far was that life had a tendency to throw you curveballs. You either picked them up and threw them back, or you held on to them and they sucked you down. She always chose to throw them back, when she could.

By the end of the meal, she knew it was a good time to make her escape so the two friends could stay together and catch up.

Getting to her feet, she picked up the dishes and carried them through to the kitchen.

Sean and Hector both helped, and she figured while they were there, she’d do the dishes. They were done within twenty minutes, and then she made her excuses.

Even though her body was on fire by just being near Hector, she wasn’t going to have sex with him while Sean was in the house.

They weren’t exactly quiet. Plus, she’d left Cutie at home tonight.

“I’ll take you home,” Hector said.

“It’s not too far.”

“I know.” He took her hand, kissing it.

“Bye, Sean. It was nice to see you again.”

“Likewise.” Sean gave her a wave, but Hector was already leading her out the door.

“Hector, what is the rush?” she asked, getting to her front door.

Sliding her key into the lock, she flicked the catch, then stepped over the threshold. She had every intention of telling Hector good night and not being greedy with his company, but as she turned to say goodbye, he was there. His hands sliding in her hair, cupping the back of her head, and tilting her to just the right angle so as he slammed his lips down on hers, she was in the right spot.

A moan slipped from between her lips, and she gripped his arms, trying to hold on for dear life as he stepped them through her door. He kicked it closed with the back of his foot.

His mouth was pure temptation.

She couldn’t let go. Didn’t want to.

Sliding her hands around his neck, she held on. Hector spun her around, pinning her to the back of the door, taking her hands, and placing them right above her head.
