Wolf sat down on the edge of the bed. “I will tell you a story all night tomorrow if you go to sleep now. I do need to take care of some business.” He didn’t want to leave her.
Evelyn grabbed his hand. “Will you be my daddy?” she asked.
Wolf leaned down and kissed her cheek. “Get some sleep.”
“I want you to be my daddy.”
This wasn’t good. Rain would be pissed if she knew her daughter was asking him this.
“Get some sleep, and we’ll talk in the morning,” he said.
Evelyn nodded and was already falling asleep as he left.
“Do not let her leave her room,” he said to the guard.
“What do I do?”
“Pick her up, put her back to bed. You know, treat her like a child.” The guard looked sick, but Wolf didn’t have the time to hand hold. He had to go deal with the asshole at the restaurant who had possibly poisoned his woman.

Rain groaned as she opened her eyes. She closed them and opened them.
There was a slight pounding in her head, and her mouth felt incredibly dry. She lifted her hand, which felt a little sluggish to her, and pressed it against her head. She didn’t feel good at all.
She groaned.
“I’m here. I’m here.”
Wolf’s voice penetrated her thoughts, and she opened her eyes to see him sitting beside her.
“Drink this.”
He held a straw to her lips. At first, she wasn’t exactly sure what to do, and then she took a drink. The water tasted so good, and she swallowed some down, then more, feeling thirstier than she ever had in her life. She had to keep drinking to quench the thirst.
“That’s okay. I’ve got you.”
She moaned again.
He put his hand to her head. “You’re fine. The fever is breaking.”
Rain collapsed to the bed with a frown. “What happened?”
“What do you remember?” Wolf asked.
She tried to collect her thoughts. “We were going on a date? To dinner? We were at the restaurant.” She put her hands to her face, recalling his questions. “It kind of goes a little fuzzy.”
“Right. We were talking about Daniel and you admitted some things about your feelings about him. Do you remember the waiter?” he asked.
Rain sighed. “Yeah, he kept on bringing wine.”
“The wine was drugged.”
She dropped her hand. “What?”
“Yes. The doctor said you had a sickness bug, and then the waiter decided to put in some drugs, and your body reacted, and it made you really sick. Your bug actually saved you because your body expelled the drug before it could take hold.”
Rain frowned. “Who would want to drug me?”
“It wasn’t for you,” he said.
“Huh?”
“It was for me.”
Rain sat up. “For you.”
“I have a lot of enemies. The waiter posed as one of the restaurant workers.”
“Wait, the drugs, would they have killed me?” she asked. This was … scary as hell. It couldn’t be. She refused to believe it.
“No, they wouldn’t have killed you. They were like … a muscle relaxant, if you will. It’s why you started to struggle to stand and you collapsed in my arms, and couldn’t move.”
“Holy crap. This kind of shit doesn’t happen in real life.” She blew out a breath and then reached for him. “What about you? You drank some wine.”
“Not the one he drugged, it would seem.” He took her hand and pressed a kiss to her inner palm. “I am so sorry.”
“Why are you sorry?” she asked. “You didn’t drug me.”
“But I put you in danger.”
“No. You cannot blame yourself. This isn’t your fault,” she said.
Why are you comforting him?
He kissed her hand again, and Rain was a little taken aback by his care. “I promised I would take care of you.”
“What happened to the … waiter?”
“He has been dealt with.”
“What about the people behind wanting to hurt you?”
“Someone will always want to hurt me,” he said. “That is the nature of the beast and what my line of work causes. Do not worry yourself over it.”
There was a knock at the door.
Just because he told her not to worry didn’t mean she suddenly stopped being concerned about him.
“Ah, you have a visitor.”
Rain glanced over at the clock and saw it was a little after nine at night. Was it the doctor? She was still in Wolf’s room. His scent surrounded her. Did he stay with her?
“How long have I been out?” she asked.
“Three days,” Wolf said.
“Oh.”
He opened the door, and her baby girl came running in. She hugged Wolf before charging toward the bed. She was dressed in a pair of princess pajamas with a matching shirt. She kicked off her slippers the moment she hit the bed. Within seconds, Rain burst out laughing as her daughter threw herself at her.
“I missed you, Mommy,” Evelyn said.
She pressed her face against her daughter’s neck, breathing her in. She loved this little girl.
Daniel had wanted to have a baby so quickly, and Rain had tried to put him off, but she hadn’t been able to deny him, and so when she found out she was pregnant, her feelings had been mixed.
