“What’s the matter?” She came into the room behind me and I turned to see her clutching the towel between her breasts with a worried look on her face. I guess I hadn’t been careful enough. I held my hand out to her and pulled her to my side.
“Nothing’s the matter love. I need to take this call.” I kissed her temple and headed into the closet with the phone to my ear.
“Gav, you need to go to that meeting. I’ve already scoped out the place where the funeral is being held and besides, there’s going to be cameras and fucknut reporters every two feet. Our people are already onboard, trust me, nothing’s gonna go wrong.”
I breathed a little easier at his words but still I wasn’t completely settled. He did some more convincing while I got dressed and then the in-house phone started ringing. “Dave’s coming up with the stuff she ordered.” Shit, I almost forgot about him.
“Let me get that, where are you?”
“Almost there. It’s going to take at least an hour to get to the island and she’s not that familiar with me.”
“She’s not familiar with you at all jackass.” I walked out of the closet as she was coming back from the bathroom. “Later.” I hung up on his laughing ass.
She’d done her her hair in some kind of fancy knot at her nape. With her face bare she looked about eighteen and I was even less sure of letting her out of my sight. This fuck! His dead ass was still causing me trouble.
I picked up the in house phone that was still ringing. “Sir, the driver’s here.”
“Send him up.”
“Your stuff is here, I’ll go down and get it.” I left her to go let Dave in.
“The fuck are you looking at?” I opened the door to his smirk.
“Nothing.” He held out the bags and walked in behind me. “I heard about Simon, you okay?” These two fucks are always talking behind my back like two old women.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” His snort told me all I needed to know about their conversation; nosy fucks. She was sitting on the bed waiting for me when I walked in and the look on her face gave me pause.
It’s true that there were times during the last day that I didn’t give him a second thought. I’d kept her so preoccupied that she hadn’t really had time to dwell on what had happened or what she’d seen. But that look brought it all full circle.
I dropped the bags on the bed next to her and knelt in front of her taking her hands in mine. “Hey, you okay?” I didn’t like the look in her eyes. What happened in the few minutes I was downstairs?
“Nothing’s wrong. I’m just thinking about all the people I’m gonna have to face today that’s all.” I searched her eyes for the truth and knew she was lying to me. That might be part of the problem but that’s not what was putting that look on her face.
I hadn’t asked her about her time with him since that first night, in fact I’d all but forgotten he ever existed. But now that she was going to be out of my sight, I found my old fears were coming back. That jealousy that should be gone now that he was no more was still alive and kicking.
“Stop worrying I’ll be fine.” She cupped my cheek, one of the only times she’s touched me intimately outside of bed and it helped just a little bit. I hate feeling like things are out of my control and this whole situation was beginning to feel like that.
Still, against my better judgment I made the decision to let her go. “I have to get going, Kevin will be here soon to take you there. He’ll stay with you the whole time until he brings you back here.” She seemed to take a sigh of relief at my words and I figured that she’d been worried about being alone.
“Give me your phone.” She grabbed her purse and took out the phone and it was only then that I realized it hadn’t rang the whole time she’d been here. I saw why when she turned it back on. “I turned it off when I went to the precinct and forgot to turn it back on.” She answered my questioning look.
She had a shit load of missed calls and messages. She seemed to lose all the color from her face as she read the screen. “Who’s been calling you? I didn’t think you knew anyone here.” I asked the question as I took the phone to program my number in even though I had a pretty good idea who it was.
I knew she was an orphan, that she had no immediate family to speak of, and the few friends she’d made during her modeling career had been left by the wayside some time ago. The senator wouldn’t allow his daughter in law to keep company with those he thought to be less than him. Asshole that he is.
