“Oh I know now, you’re Gavin Sorrento’s errand boy.” He said the words with a condescending sneer but Kevin just grinned before walking me around him to leave.
A tug of war ensued with me caught in the middle before Kevin pushed him back and got in his face. “Please stop, let me…” I was going to sacrifice myself, not willing to let anyone else get hurt because of me, but Kevin seems to be made of pretty much the same stuff Gavin was.
“Senator, unless you want all those reporters out there to question why you’re manhandling your daughter in law at your son’s funeral I suggest you back the fuck off.”
He leaned in and whispered something in the senator’s ear that I couldn’t hear, something that made all the blood leave the other man’s face, before taking my hand firmly in his and walking away.
Gavin
“We’re almost there Gav.” He’d done a hundred and ten all the way here, cutting the time in half. It’s a miracle the cops hadn’t stopped us, but I guess they had better things to do than stake out the highway on a lazy Wednesday morning.
I saw the line of cars heading down the street in our direction a few minutes after we left the highway and figured it was the funeral procession. Since Kevin hadn’t called I guess things were okay. Shit, spoke too soon. My phone rang in the quiet of the car and I rushed to answer when I saw it was him.
“We have a problem where are you?”
“I’m down the road from the cemetery, what problem?” I looked out the window for the car he was driving, another one of mine, this one a black Royce instead of the white I preferred.
“Third car from the front, the car behind us is full of the senator’s henchmen. I think they’re gonna try to make a grab for her. The old man already tried.”
“I’m on it.” I relayed the message to Dave and once again withstood the urge to get out of the car and move.
It wasn’t hard to see the car that was riding his bumper. “Tell Kev to pull up closer to the car in front.” He waited for me to pass on his instructions and we watched Kev make the move before Dave accelerated and made an illegal U-turn, cutting off the car that was tailing them before straightening up to follow behind them.
I was tempted to tell him to stop the car so I could go get her but not here, not yet. I’m not sure at this point how safe she would be out in the open. I didn’t bother looking back at the car behind us, there’ll be time enough to get the details on its occupants later. Right now the most important thing was getting her back to my place.
I was pissed the fuck off that I hadn’t followed to my instincts. Everything in me told me that something was wrong but I let her bullshit me with that shit. Now her ass will be lucky if she ever steps foot outside again. Speaking of which…
“Kevin, head to my place in Connecticut. Dave will lose these fucks.” He grinned into the rearview mirror and all but rubbed his hands in delight. Asshole thinks this is Baghdad. He’s not happy unless there’s some shit going down that he can sink his teeth into.
I watched Kev who was the one driving now as he pulled out of the line at the next intersection and sped away. The car behind us tried to make a move but Dave blocked them in each time until the Royce disappeared from view.
“Lose them!” I ordered Dave after I hung up with Kev and called her number. “You okay? I’m right behind you. Kevin’s going to take you to my country home don’t be afraid. As soon as I lose these men I’ll be with you.”
“Be careful.” If that’s all she had to say to me she couldn’t be doing too bad. Then again, she’s good at hiding shit.
“I’ll stay on the phone with you, you don’t have to say anything, just let me hear you breathe.”
I closed my eyes and laid my head back against the seat as Dave did his thing. The car drives so smoothly I didn’t feel any of his maneuvers but I knew when we’d lost the tail when he made the war cry. “That asshole thought he was as good as me. Sucker!” He does like to toot his own horn.
“They’re gone now baby, see you in a little bit.” I waited for her to hang up before going back to the photos Kev had sent, but I couldn’t get past the door with the locks and the story they told.
Why would the senator go to such lengths to grab her? What the fuck could he possibly want? His son is dead, and even if they had a close relationship before, something I didn’t believe, there was still no reason for such actions.
