It was Petru who closed the laceration on his chest when she reluctantly disconnected from the vein. All the while, he shared the way she made him feel with the way she was working his cock. Each scorching stroke sent streaks of fire racing through him, through her.

Don’t stop, Safia.

She wouldn’t have stopped for the world. Her breathing found the pattern of his. Her core was so hot she feared she might detonate any moment. Her nipples were twin flames burning, as out of control as Petru was. The worst was the building tension deep inside her core. She needed. Desperately needed.

Then his fingers were there, right where she needed them to be, stroking gently, then harder, matching the rhythm of her fist curled around his cock. He seemed to know exactly where to press, to tug and flick. One moment he would fill her, then the next he would circle her clit until she was driven nearly out of her mind. Just before she found release, he pressed into her again, curling his finger to hit the bundle of nerves that caused her to explode. When she did, he did, erupting like a volcano.

The ripples in her body swelled to rolling waves, each as strong and lasting as the next. They seemed to soar together until she felt as if they’d been flung out into the universe with a million stars. Was that in her mind? Or his? It didn’t matter, only that they shared the beauty of it. She dropped her forehead against his shoulder and clung to him as he slowly brought her back to reality.

Safia became aware of him murmuring to her softly in his own language as he rubbed her back gently. His mouth was against her ear, his warm breath teasing her into relaxing into him.

“Tell me what to expect.” She didn’t move away, snuggling closer to him.

“Just stay right here. The others, including Aura, have been informed you are prepared to undergo the conversion, and they are waiting to aid you in your journey. Aura has clearly given you blood on several occasions. I am hoping that helps ease you into our world, but no matter what happens, Safia, I will be with you.”

“Can something go wrong?”

“Nothing will go wrong. You’re strong, Pelkgapâd és Meke Pirämet. I believe the conversion will begin immediately and be over quickly. You must give yourself over to it. Don’t fight it.”

She nodded, believing him. She was in his mind, but more than that, already she was uneasy, the blissful feeling fading to be replaced by a hot glow stealing into her stomach. “Do you feel that, Petru?” She started to pull away from him.

Petru tightened his arms around her. “Stay with me a little longer. I’ll take us to the floor and make you as comfortable as possible.”

She didn’t see how it was possible to wait, but she held on to him as the heat blossomed into a blowtorch, striking at her internal organs. She gasped and bit down on his shoulder.

“Breathe with me.”

Safia felt him surround her, anchor in her mind, and move through her body, monitoring what was happening even as he eased both of them to the floor. The soil was rich with minerals and felt cool on her overheated skin. She heard the echo of voices raised in a chant spoken in the ancient Carpathian language.

Waves of pain, one after another, began. Endless. Merciless. It was agony. There was no getting around that, but through it all, even as her body seized, lifted and was slammed down, convulsing, Petru never left her, staying with her, breathing with her, shouldering as much of the pain as possible. When her body expelled toxins, he instantly cleared them away and left behind a clean, sweet-smelling environment.

She clung to his mind, hiding herself there, wholly dependent, trusting that he would see her through this terrible crisis. She had committed herself to this path, and she didn’t fight it, breathing through each wave of agony to try to rise above it, staying as relaxed as possible and letting Petru guide her into his world.

“You’re there, sívamet. I’m sending you to sleep. Your body will do the rest,” he whispered. “You’ve been so brave.”

She felt the brush of his lips on her forehead, and then sweet oblivion took her.

CHAPTER

14

Laughter erupted all around her, and Safia exchanged a shared look of amusement with Aura. The bride’s home had been declared to be her brother Badis and Layla’s house. The two had transformed it into a festive setting fit for any bride and her henna ceremony. Only family attended the ceremony with the exception of Aura, but Aura was considered family.

The women and six-year-old Tala arrived in a procession of horse-drawn carriages that made Safia so happy, tears threatened. They carried gifts as they approached the house, playing the bendir, a wooden-framed drum, as they sang songs. Safia knew they couldn’t stick exactly to tradition, but they followed as best they could under the circumstances.
