“No, I don’t have any other witches here.”
Fox casually draped his arms around Winter’s shoulders. His fingers lightly threaded through his long silky hair. Nerves and hope battled it out for air in his bloodstream. He was surprised Winter had allowed him to touch this much, to stay this long on his lap. “You don’t have any witches on the side? A favorite witch you call up for a quick booty call?” he teased.
Winter was trying so damn hard to keep his expression stern, but his lips didn’t look like they wanted to cooperate. They kept twitching like they wanted to smile. “I don’t have a booty call witch.”
“A booty call wolf?”
Winter rolled his eyes. “No booty call witch, wolf, vampire, or human,” he listed with a sigh.
“I’m just checking,” Fox said, keeping his voice light and innocent. “I was thinking we couldn’t have won that last round without my spectacular grenade distraction. I should be rewarded with a kiss.”
If Fox hadn’t been so close to Winter, he might have missed the way those beautiful icy blue eyes dilated at his words or the way his breathing hitched ever so slightly. Winter’s full lips parted, and the tip of his tongue darted out, wetting his bottom lip.
Sucking in a breath, Fox started to move in, ready to treasure the taste of this creature’s perfect mouth, but Winter’s hands tightened on his hips and gave him a tiny push backward while at the same time, Winter shoved into the cushions, putting more space between them.
“No,” he said softly.
“What?” Obviously Fox hadn’t heard him correctly. Everything about Winter’s body language was shouting that he wanted this kiss, needed this damn kiss.
“No, this is a bad idea.”
Fox snorted. “You’re insane. A kiss is never a bad idea.”
Winter looked at him like he’d lost his mind. And maybe Fox had. There certainly wasn’t any blood left to circulate around his gray matter. It had all charged south in high hopes that this would turn into so much more than a kiss.
Without uttering another word, Winter lifted Fox off of his lap and placed him on the cushion beside him before climbing to his feet. He grabbed up the plates they’d stacked on the table from the pizza and carried them back toward the kitchen. Oh, Fox didn’t miss that his gait was a little awkward from the fucking hard-on still pressing against the front of his pants. Winter was attracted to him; there was no doubt about that.
“I should probably send some emails and check some of my other resources. They might have some news on Damon and what he might be planning,” Winter said as he placed the plates into the sink.
This was total bullshit. Fox refused to be blown off quite like this. Humiliation burned through him. He was tired of not being good enough for someone. He and Winter had been having a good time. Why not have an even better one? If Winter wasn’t interested, then he could gracefully accept his rejection, but that wasn’t the case. Winter was running from him.
Shoving off the couch, Fox followed Winter into the kitchen and stood in front of the doorway at the end of the breakfast bar, blocking any additional retreat the vampire had planned.
“Don’t you dare bullshit me,” Fox said sharply. Winter’s eyebrows jumped almost to his hairline. “You’re attracted to me, and what? I’m not good enough for you?”
“What?” Winter’s voice cracked and he actually took a step backward, bumping his spine against the sink.
“Witches not good enough for a vampire like you?” Fox stalked closer, his hands on his hips. “You prefer to put your cock only in other vampires? Or do you dally with humans as well?” Part of him wished he could just walk away and laugh it all off. He’d thought he could just shrug off another of Winter’s rejections. He was afraid Winter was going to open his mouth and admit that he wasn’t truly attracted to Fox, that Fox was not good enough to lick his dick.
“This has nothing to do with you being born a witch,” Winter growled.
“Then it’s because I’m a shitty witch. I don’t know enough magic to be worth your time.”
“Fox, you’re being fucking ridiculous!”
“Then clarify, oh wise one!” He extended both hands out to either side, motioning to him that the floor was his for his grand explanation.
“I don’t…I don’t fuck around with anyone.”
Fox’s brain locked up. His mouth opened and closed a couple of times as he tried to speak, but he couldn’t come up with anything. There was only one thought repeating in his brain, and that so couldn’t be right. “You’re a virgin? A four-hundred-year-old virgin?”
Winter dropped his head back and groaned loudly, sounding as if Fox was the most trying creature in all of existence. “No, I’m not a virgin. And I’m not four hundred fucking years old.”
