Instantly my suspicions rise and for no good reason. Peyton doesn’t have a mean bone in her body, yet she scares the ever-loving shit out of me. “What for?”

“She wants to invite her out to lunch on Thursday. Her and Autumn have a standing reservation or something and Peyton would love Kelsey to join them.”

“Well, that’s nice of her.”

“My wife is very nice,” Noah says with a bit of humor. “She’s very, very nice, if you know what I mean.” He waggles his eyebrows at me.

“Gross.”

Noah cackles. “Don’t even. There’s no way you haven’t tapped that yet.”

“That . . . isn’t a tree,” I tell him.

“I was trying to be PC.”

“Nothing about this conversation is PC.” I shake my head. “I don’t know if I want to give anyone with the last name Westbury my girlfriend’s number.”

Girlfriend. Did I just call Kelsey my girlfriend?

I did and I like it.

I try to hide my smile, but I’m sure Noah sees it. Thankfully, he doesn’t say anything. probably because he knows I can kick his ass.

Noah holds his hand to chest and acts as if I’ve broken his heart. “You know my wife can make your life hell.”

“Low blow, Westbury.”

He giggles and sets his hands under the bar to aid my lift. I do another rep of fifteen and then follow him to the locker room. On our way, we run into Myles and Peyton. She beams at her husband and even though they keep their PDA to the bare minimum, he leans down and kisses her quickly.

“Did you ask him?” she asks her husband.

“Yes, he asked me,” I say instead of waiting for Noah to confirm. “You know you could’ve asked me.”

“Asked him what?” Myles looks at all of us. “I need to know.”

“For Kelsey’s number. Autumn and I want to take her to lunch,” Peyton tells Myles.

He scoffs. “You should’ve asked me. I have it.”

“You do?” I ask.

Myles shrugs. “Of course. I love Kelsey. She’s a doll.”

“She is,” I say with a sigh. There’s a moment of silence in the hall, with everyone staring at me. I shrug. “Whatever. Anyway, I’ll give you her number or you can get it from Myles. But I want to check with her first. Is that okay?”

Peyton nods. “I expect nothing less, Alex.” She rises up and kisses Noah again. “I’ll see you later.” As she and Myles pass by, Noah watches her until she’s out of sight.

Inside the locker room, I find my phone in my pocket and send a text to Kelsey.

Hey babe

Peyton, Noah’s wife, would like your number. She wants to invite you out for lunch.

I hit send and then think I probably shouldn’t have given that away, but then Kelsey would probably ask why, and I’d have to come clean anyway.

Kelsey Sloane

I. AM. DEAD!

Please don’t die. I’d miss you too much.

Kelsey Sloane

Seriously though. Her dad is a DILF!

Well there goes my ego

Kelsey Sloane

You’re my FILF

FILF?

Wait I’m not sure I want to know.

Kelsey Sloane

Hahahahahaha

Footballer I like to fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

You get it

No wait

Maybe CILF

No, I don’t like it

PILF

PILF? CILF?

“What the fuck is a PILF? CILF?”

“What are you talking about?”

I shake my head, a smile still ghosting my lips. I can’t tell him my girl thinks Peyton’s dad is a DILF. That could have so many repercussions. Although, I know Noah knows how people feel about his dad and father-in-law. Hearing it from his teammates might be a different story, though.

“Nothing,” I say while waiting for Kelsey to text back. “Just some crap Kels is saying.”

“You like her a lot, don’t you?”

I nod and turn toward where Noah sits in front of his locker. “I do, but I feel like shit is going to be complicated come Friday night. I shouldn’t have invited her.”

“Don’t you think she would’ve been hurt? What if she saw pictures from the event and all the other dates?”

“That’s the problem. What if Maggie’s friends say something offhanded to her or me?”

“Shit is going to happen whether you try to avoid it or not. You and Maggie had a very public relationship. It stands to reason people are going to say something stupid.”

“Did that ever happen with you and Peyton?”

Noah shakes his head. “Not really, but Peyton has been a fixture in my life forever. It’s not like she was new to the media. If that makes sense.”

“Yeah, it does.” I look back at my phone and see the chat bubbles pop up. “I just hope it’s not a total shit show this Friday.”

Kelsey Sloane

PILF – player I like to fu… CLIF – center I like to fu… I can keep going.

But yes, give her my number.

No need to keep going. I get what you’re putting down EILF

Kelsey Sloane

Clever!

Sometime around six, I decide to drive to Kelsey’s. Traffic’s a bitch. Bumper-to-bumper congestion, with pedestrians not giving a shit whether someone hits them or not. I lose count of how many times I honk at someone for darting in front of Rizzo. People see my Tesla and they don’t care. When they see my truck, they’re scared.
