“That’s enough,” Jackson snaps when we pass another empty rollercoaster. “We got a feral grizzly on the loose to deal with. Can we save storytime for later?”
“Alright, enough chitty chatty,” I say as I roll my shoulders, getting ready to fight another savage beast. “Let’s focus on da task at hand.”
The wind swirls and changes directions. The hairs on my arms stand up when I pick up his scent.
“Over there, boss,” I say as I spin on my heels.
Jackson nods. “Let’s go. Let’s do this one by the book.”
“That might not work since Ryker can barely read,” Grayson says with a laugh.
“If the book has pictures, I’m good,” Ryker says as he flexes his huge tattooed arms.
“Grayson, Ryker,” Jackson says in his no-longer-fucking-around tone. “Bears out. I’ll distract him and you two come from behind, pin him down, and then Remy does his thing.”
I grin as I pull out my sword. “I’ll give dat mad bear a little slicey slicey.”
The scent gets stronger.
My wolf growls inside as the sick rank unnatural smell fills our lungs.
Every time, it reminds me.
It brings me back to that horrific day…
I squeeze the handle of my sword as my resolve thickens. It’s time to do what needs to be done. It’s time to put down that feral bear for good.
“I see him,” Jackson whispers as he ducks behind a hot dog cart. “Beside the haunted house.”
I duck behind a bench and peek through the wooden slats.
It’s a bear alright. And he’s definitely feral.
The beast is stomping around with a snarl on his lips. He roars at a napkin that flies by in the wind and then swipes his long deadly claws at a cart selling helium balloons. It tips over and the balloons escape into the sky as he lets out a savage bloodthirsty roar.
Jackson gives Ryker and Grayson a nod.
The boys hurry behind the arcade building and let their bears out.
My heart beats a little harder as that beautiful feeling of adrenaline whips through my veins. I grin at the reflection in my sword. This is for all of you. Your sacrifice won’t be in vain.
Grayson’s polar bear steps out and circles downwind from the violent grizzly. Ryker’s Kodiak bear quickly follows.
Jackson waits until they’re in position and then steps out from behind the hot dog cart and waves his hands over his head.
“Hey!” he hollers at the top of his lungs.
The nasty unhinged bear whips his head around and lets out a fierce murderous snarl at the sight of my team leader.
“Yeah come and get it, motherfucker,” Jackson shouts as he steps into the open area. There’s a shallow water fountain between them with a ledge where less than an hour ago, tired parents were resting while their annoying little brats whined to go on the next ride.
The stench of the feral bear makes my wolf crazy. He starts prowling around inside as the bear makes its way toward Jackson.
Grayson and Ryker’s bears sneak up on the raging grizzly from behind as he steps into the fountain with a low vicious rumble.
I run my thumb along the smooth handle of my sword as I get ready to leap out and take the feral beast’s life.
This is for all of you.
I think of my father. My mother. My aunts and uncles. My cousins and brother.
I remember their cold pale faces. The claw marks slashed through once warm skin. The dark sticky blood. The wet soil.
I remember the helpless feeling I had as my whole world crumbled down around me.
A wolf without a pack is a sad lonely thing and that feral bear took away mine.
He took everything from me.
That day, I vowed to protect the world from ruthless feral bears and I’ve been doing it ever since. I killed the beast who slaughtered my pack with this sword and now, I’ll slaughter this one too.
I know there’s a person trapped inside there. I know there’s some collateral damage. But that’s just the way things go sometimes. I won’t let what happened to my family happen to anyone else. I won’t let him continue this rampage for another second.
“Come and get it!” Jackson shouts as he waves his arms while our two bears sneak forward.
He’s trying to keep him from seeing Grayson and Ryker. We’ll avoid a fight if the bear stays distracted. They’ll be able to tackle him from behind, pin him, and then I’ll jump out and quickly finish the job.
The grizzly steps out of the fountain and shakes the water from his fur with a snarl.
Ryker and Grayson walk around it on either side. It’s quieter than stomping through the water on big paws and making a ton of noise.
Just as the grizzly nears Jackson, and just before the boys are about to make a break for it, Grayson’s clumsy-ass polar bear steps on an empty cup and the feral grizzly yanks his head around with a growl.
