I rolled her over onto her back and slid between her legs, my cock—covered only by a thin piece of material—pressed against her core.
I stared down into her sleepy eyes and said, “Your glucose was through the roof.”
She blinked. “Really?”
“As in, so high that you were pretty out of it,” I said. “I called my sister to figure out what I needed to give you and waited until it was lower before I sat down to wait for you to wake up. Then I fell asleep.”
Her beautiful eyes studied my face for a long moment before she said, “I guess I should say thank you?”
“You really suck at this blood glucose monitoring thing,” I remarked.
She shifted restlessly against me and said, “I have no clue what you’re talking about.”
I hummed as I bent down and ran my nose along her cheekbone.
“Haze?” she asked.
“Mama?” I teased.
“I need to know that I’m reading this correctly,” she said. “If you get caught, you’ll be in trouble. If I were to guess, you probably would lose your job if they found out you were sleeping with a prime suspect.”
“My boss is a dumbass,” I responded. “If he thinks you’re guilty, it’s because he’s trying to entertain the senator in some way. Which, might I add, won’t happen while I’m still there.”
“Why?” she asked, and that’s when I saw the confusion in her eyes.
She truly had no idea why.
“Because I know you didn’t do it,” I replied. “Despite the fact that you’re the sister of a Bratva Pakhan, that doesn’t mean that you’re associated with him.” I paused. “And to be completely truthful, at this point, I’m not even sure I care.”
“You don’t care if I have anything to do with my brother’s ‘so-called’ business?” she questioned, obviously confused.
I caught the edge of the small slip of fabric that was holding her nightgown onto her shoulder and slid the tiny piece to the side, baring her skin.
She had a small scar right above her collarbone.
I bent down and kissed it before saying, “Maybe if I’d met you fresh out of the military, I might’ve been a little less unforgiving of your brother’s profession and your involvement in it. However, I’ve done a lot of changing over the last decade, and to be completely honest…some men just need killing.”
Her mouth fell open when I pulled back from pressing my lips against her skin.
“Are you joking?” she asked.
“Nope,” I revealed. “I’ve been doing this job for a while now, and each case I work…I’m just finding it harder to care about the human population when they don’t reciprocate.”
She lifted her hand and ran it over my jaw, her fingers sifting through the beard hairs there.
I needed a trim, both with my hair and my beard, but I kind of liked the way her fingers felt rubbing against my bristly jaw.
“You’re not, like, trying to get me to confess to anything, right? So your dudes outside can hear everything that’s being said?” she asked.
I could see why she thought that since we had been following her around non-stop for over a month, but in this instance, I felt the need to reassure her.
“I can’t say that I’ve been very rational about this,” I offered. “We have been listening in at the hallways, but we can’t hear much. The only time we can hear anything you say is when we’re in my office and we’re using a microphone. Your phone line is tapped, but over the last month, you have only called about scheduled deliveries, so you have nothing to worry about there.”
Her eyes twinkled as she said, “And the cameras that you installed in my living room?”
The grin that spread across my face was prideful. “That was for my own viewing pleasure.”
I loved that I hadn’t pulled one over on her. I enjoyed it even more that she allowed me to watch all these weeks and hadn’t complained about my invasion of privacy.
I was a sick motherfucker.
“I should be running away from you screaming,” she shared.
“You probably should,” I admitted. “I’m going to have to pretend like I don’t like you.”
“You like me?” she asked, batting her eyelashes at me.
“You had me from the moment our eyes met in that bar,” I divulged.
She bit her lip, and that’s when whatever semblance of control I was hanging onto broke.
I bent down and kissed her, my tongue plunging into her mouth and swallowing her gasp.
My hands went down to her butt as I slowly smoothed my hands up the length of her bare leg, finding my way underneath the nightgown that was deliciously sexy.
When I found bare ass, I groaned, pulling back from her kiss.
“You always sleep with no panties?” I asked.
She smiled, her eyes crinkling at the corners. “Only when I’m waiting for a sexy detective to break in in the middle of the night.” She paused. “I had no clue that you were right next door the whole time, though.”
