Did he think she thought she was better than him?
She wanted to scream.
Instead, she picked up her clothes and had to wonder who came into his apartment to close the curtains for him. She carried her clothes through to the laundry basket in his en suite bathroom. As she did this, memories of the past week rushed through her mind.
She had expected their vacation to be filled with sex. When her cycle started, she had thought he’d terminate it and head home. He hadn’t. Instead of fucking, they hung out together. Gabriel had gone shopping with her, held her hand as they walked through town, like any other normal couple. He’d cooked for her as well.
She already figured out he’d been in her house. The food he made for her came from her mother’s cookbook. She also happened to notice he kept referring to his cell phone. It wasn’t hard to deduce Nigel had given him the spare key, and Gabriel had snooped around her home.
Faith had also worked out that he’d spoken to Nigel. He was cooking the food she couldn’t bring herself to make.
“See, another thing that made you less of a monster. Ugh, you insufferable man.” She dumped her clothes into the laundry basket, with a bit more vigor than she intended, but she refused to apologize for it.
She brushed some hair back from her face and blew out a breath. “I’m not going to apologize.”
Walking back into the bedroom, she remembered all the times they walked on the beach. He had spent a day reading to her, as she lapped up the sun. Gabriel had also applied sunscreen to her body. He’d been very thorough as he did this.
They hung out, watched movies, or she listened to him read. They played a few games, and in all honestly, she learned to have fun. It had been a long time since she had experienced any kind of fun.
And yet, he had the audacity to tell her that she would never go for a man like him. Of all the things he could say, that pissed her off the most.
She got to her feet, and without putting a stitch of clothing on, she stormed out of the bedroom and went to Gabriel’s office. Faith refused to knock. If he could say horrible stuff about her, then he could get used to having his privacy snapped away.
He was sitting on one of his sofas, glass in hand, and she saw the dark amber liquid. She had no idea if it was whiskey or brandy, but either way, the bottle wasn’t empty, so she wasn’t worried.
“What do you want, Faith?”
“I want an apology,” she said.
Now that she was standing in front of him without a single piece of clothing, she was starting to question what she was actually doing, but instead, she folded her arms underneath her breasts and kept to her firm stance. She was not in the wrong.
“You want an apology.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“You had no right to accuse me like that.”
“Accuse you?”
“Yes, you said that I would never give you a chance. You never asked me. You never even allowed me the chance to reject you.”
“Don’t, Faith.”
“Don’t what? Don’t tell you that from the moment I first met you I was confused. That I looked at you and knew I should be terrified, and yet, it was the most excited I had ever been? How I kept thinking about you? How part of me wished you would come back? Do you have any idea how guilty I felt because I wanted my brother to fuck up again, just so you had a reason to come back? I’m nothing, Gabriel. I’m no one. I didn’t even know what kind of career I wanted, do you know why?” She didn’t give him a chance to answer as she just kept talking. “I wanted to be a mother, a wife. Yeah, in a world where women want careers and to have it all, all I wanted was to be like my mother. A stay-at-home wife who took care of her family. Who was always there for everyone! I knew you weren’t wearing a condom. I knew I had to tell you about it, but I didn’t. Then with everything with Nigel, I freaked out, and you said you were never wearing a condom and right now I’m babbling.” She growled and then ran fingers through her hair. “I love you, Gabriel Finch. I love you more than I ever thought was possible and that scares me, okay? I don’t know if I’m pregnant now, but look at Nigel. What if I fuck our child up as well? What if you wake up one day and realize you’re with the wrong woman? What then?”
She was starting to lose her composure, and she took several deep breaths. Oh, crap. She had intended to give him a piece of her mind. She hadn’t planned on telling him how she felt.
