“I’m on a trial basis at the food court anyway, so I guess this would be better,” Everly says.

“Good. Your brother will be happy about it.” We finish dinner and then I help her with the dishes. As she scrubs, I toss in the dishwasher.

“Thank you for dinner again.” I lean in and give her a gentle peck on the cheek. It’s a dumb move and I regret it immediately, so I excuse myself and say, “Goodnight. I’m exhausted.”

“Goodnight, Jules.” She dries her hands and then turns off the light.

It’s the next morning when I’m doing my laundry, I find her clothes in the dryer. “Fuck,” I groan. My dick throbs in my sweats as I pull her panties out of the pile and bring them to my nose. They’re freshly laundered, but I don’t care because they’re hers. Does that make me twisted? Maybe. Do I fucking care? No. “Hey, I thought I was supposed to be taking care of that?”

My back straightens and I drop them back into the pile. “Well, I figured you’d quit your job first before you’d jump on all the tasks. Besides, I have a lot of clothes to handle.”

“Of course.” She steps beside me and then grabs the basket, pulling her clothes out of the dryer. “How often do you do your clothes?”

“I have one day off a week, so I try to get it done within two weeks. Usually both my hampers in my bathroom and bedroom are overflowing by then.

“Okay. Well, I’ll check the hamper twice a week. How is that?”

“Sounds great,” I say, feeling like a damn slob. “I have to go to the store in a bit. Is there anything else we need?”

“I’m not sure exactly because it will depend on what you want to eat.”

“Well, how about we get this started and then go together?”

“I think that’s a good idea.”

Twenty minutes later we were dressed and ready to go. She hops in my truck and the damn air is sucked out of the vehicle. Maybe we should have taken the sedan which has just a little more breathing room. Damn it, the lack of space feels so confined.

“So how is school?” I asked, trying to distract myself.

“It’s great. I’m killing it as you can see.” She palms the bottom of her hair, and it bounces like a spring. I love the color and the way the light shines off it. Damn, could she be any more perfect? This wasn’t meant to be a bonding moment, but I can’t help myself.

“So, are you on call today or is it your actual day off?”

“It’s my day off,” I say, turning my head to peek at her.

“That sucks,” she mutters.

“Why?”

“Because you’re going to the store instead of just relaxing.” Spending time with her is still better than anything else. I should be keeping my distance, but I couldn’t help myself. All I knew was that being around Everly was addictive.

“I know. That’s why I’m hoping that you can start making it a little easier. It’s crazy how much the little mundane tasks become time wasters.”

“Right? The little things take too much time. You need more days off. Will you get more soon?”

“Next year when I finish my residency, I’ll be moving to Steeleville and working at the Medical Center there.”

“Until then you work in Dallas?”

“Yes, and I’ll have to find a place in Steeleville. It’s not like it’s a huge town. There are apartment buildings that are already rented and I’m waiting to buy a house. The drive there is only forty-five minutes.” She doesn’t realize that I’m staying here for her. I actually can stay with my parents until I have a house that I want.

“Oh, well. I hope that’s not for at least four months.”

“I have ten more months on this lease.”

“Well, that’s good for me.” It’s a little white lie, but I don’t want her to feel like a burden.

“Come on, we’re here.” It takes us about two hours to shop and get back to the house.

My phone rang, so I excused myself to speak with my father while she made lunch.

Chapter Four

Everly

It’s been a full month, and things have moved smoothly between us. When it comes to being roommates, we glide like butter, perfectly smooth. There wasn’t any friction to be had, and maybe that’s because I never crossed the line after quitting my cashier gig.

My job didn’t even care that I left because there was another person looking for a job that same day. They never take the sign down because young kids have a hard time juggling school and work. I thanked them for the opportunity and collected my check. Julian even waited for me in the mall parking lot to ensure I wasn’t upset after I told the manager. He wanted to go in with me, but I told him no. “Look, I’m a big girl and I can handle myself.”
