“No, baby. The way you screamed my name and pulled at my hair was all I needed. Not to mention you coming on my tongue. What I mean is, how are you feeling about us? That it was me who gave you the best orgasm of your life.”

“The best, huh?” She laughs, just like I hoped she would. “It complicates things.”

“It doesn’t have to. I want you, Charlotte. The rest are just details.”

“Those details are what feed us and put a roof over our heads.”

“There are no rules against it,” I remind her.

She reaches for the covers, and I move back, letting her climb beneath them. Once she’s settled, I move to lie next to her. “I can see that big brain of yours working overtime. Let me help you.” I move in close and place a featherlight kiss on her lips. “I want you, Charlie. Not for a night or a weekend. I want you for movie nights and dinner, and I want you when you’re in your nest on the couch curled up with a book. I want to be next to you while you read. I want to call you when I have a good day, and I want to be able to vent to you when my day is shit.”

“Sounds like you want a girlfriend.”

“Yeah, I guess I do, but to me, you’d be more than just my girlfriend. You’d be my everything.”

My heart thunders in my chest. “This isn’t us, Spencer. We work together, and I refuse for someone to think that I slept my way into my position.”

“Charlie, your position was yours before the buyout. No one is going to think that, and if they do, fuck them. We know the truth.”

“Can we… slow this down?” She bites down on her bottom lip, her nerves about what she’s asked of me shining through.

She didn’t say no.

“As slow as you want, as long as you know what I want.”

“Me?” she asks. Her voice is so soft I almost miss it.

“Yeah, baby. You.” I kiss her again, slowly stroking her tongue with mine. She doesn’t seem to mind that she can taste herself on me. “Can I stay?” I sound like a needy fuck, but I’m not ready to go home.

“You want to stay? As in, spend the night?”

“I do.”

“Why?”

“Because after all of these years, I got to find out what you taste like, and I’m not ready to walk away from you just yet. I’ll be on my best behavior, I promise.”

“Do you know how to behave?” she teases.

I slide my hand over to rest on her cheek. “I’ll never break a promise to you, Charlie. We can move this as slowly as you want, but please let me stay. I want to hold you. That’s it.”

“You’ll be here when I wake up?”

I nod. “I want to be.”

“I know that I should say no. I should tell you that you need to go home and that tonight should never have happened.”

“But?”

“I don’t want to. I want to know what it’s like to sleep in your arms and to wake up the same way.” She nods and rolls over, giving me her back.

Not willing to push her further, I quickly strip down to my boxer briefs before I reach over to turn off the bedside lamp, slide beneath the covers, and pull her into my arms. “This,” I say, kissing her bare shoulder.

“This what?” she asks. Her voice is so soft I almost miss it. It’s as if she’s afraid to hear my answer.

“This is what I’ve been missing.” Her body melts into me at my confession.

“What are we going to tell my sister?”

“Tell her we’re dating. Tell her that you’re mine. I don’t care what you tell her as long as she knows that this is happening. However fast or slow you want it to go.”

“Maybe you can—” she starts, but I interrupt her.

“No. I’m not sneaking out. I’m not hiding this, Charlotte. You’re not some dirty little secret. We’re adults, and it’s nobody’s fucking business but ours.”

“She’s my sister.”

“Which is why we should be honest with her. I know what you’re thinking, Charlie girl, and it’s not going to happen. I won’t change my mind in the light of day.”

She’s quiet, and I take that as the discussion is over. I close my eyes and bury my face in her neck. It’s still hard for me to believe I’m here with her like this. That I get to hold her in my arms all night long. Hopefully, she’ll let me make her breakfast, or hell take her and Audrey out. That works for me too. I meant what I said. I’m not going to hide this. Sure, that makes things a little sticky at work, but we’ll figure it out. She’s worth it.

“Sweet dreams, Spence,” she whispers, and my heart flips in my chest.
