“Don’t patronize me.” This time when she stands, I don’t stop her. “I love my little sister more than anything else in this entire world. I want her wedding to be everything she’s ever dreamed of. You stay out of my way, and I’ll stay out of yours.” With those parting words, she storms off.

It takes everything in me not to chase after her. I want to demand she tell me what the fuck I did all those years ago for her to hate me. I don’t bother, and I know the answer. Charlotte Krause is out of my league. She knows it. I know it. Everyone knows it. She has no qualms about flaunting it as well.

Instead, I keep my ass planted in the sand even though the appeal of this night vanished when Charlotte walked away from me. This is going to be a long-ass weekend.

When I finally made it back to our suite, my mind raced with thoughts of my interaction with Charlotte. I didn’t even notice Jasper snoring, too caught up in my mind. It means I had a shit night’s sleep.

When I hear Jasper move to the bathroom, I roll over and look at the clock. Just after eight. I got maybe three hours of sleep. It’s going to be one long, exhausting day.

I realize we have the rehearsal this evening. I’ll have to see Charlotte. That should piss me off, but it doesn’t. Maybe I can make the best of this weekend. I can get her to tell me why she dislikes me so much. I’ll either be successful or just piss her off even more. Either way, I’m going to do it.

“Hey,” Jasper greets me. “Where did you disappear to last night?” He sits on the edge of his bed.

“Oh, you mean when you were snoring like a boar hog?” I ask. “How the hell has Lorelei put up with you for so long?”

“Fuck off,” he grumbles. “Where did you go?”

“I went down to the beach.”

“It’s funny that we live by the beach and very rarely take the time to go there.”

“That’s why I was taking advantage of it,” I tell him.

“What’s on the agenda today?”

“Did you not get a copy of the email Charlie sent?” I ask him, rolling my eyes. “They have everything mapped out. I’m in charge of making sure the cake is good to go for tomorrow.”

“She trusted you with the cake?” he asks, his eyebrows raised. It’s not a secret that there is no love lost between Charlotte and me.

“Oh, I’m sure she’s going to check on her own. She just needed to pretend to be spreading the duties since I’m the best man.”

Jasper chuckles. “I can see that from her. What do we do until then?”

Before I can answer, my phone rings. When I see Lincoln’s name, I grin. “You on your way?” I ask my best friend, who’s also the groom.

“Not yet.”

“What? Linc, man, you’re getting married tomorrow. What in the hell do you mean not yet?” I ask him.

“This deal is taking longer to close than I anticipated.”

“You’re getting married.” I shouldn’t have to spell that shit out for him. Audrey is a cool girl, I like her for my buddy, but damn, she’s going to be pissed he’s not here yet.

“I’m working on it. Listen, can you tell Audrey for me? I tried to call her cell and couldn’t get her. I’m headed into a meeting and won’t be able to answer when she calls me back.”

“Fuck that. I’m not telling your fiancée that you’re going to be later than you thought. No way. Nope. Dude, you’re sending me to do your dirty work.”

“Spencer.” His voice is pleading. “I don’t have time to argue. Please just tell Audrey I’ll call her as soon as this meeting is over. I’ll be there. Just… tell her for me. Tell her I love her.”

“Fine. You owe me. You owe me big,” I tell him.

“When you get married, I’ll do the same for you.”

“Fuck you. If and when I ever get married, there is nothing that’s going to keep me from being involved.”

“I’ve been working on this deal for months.”

“You only get married once, brother,” I remind him.

He sighs. “I have to go. Thank you. Tell Audrey that I love her, and I’ll call her when I’m on my way.”

“Fine.” I end the call. I don’t bother saying goodbye. This is going to suck.

“Is he really not on the road?” Jasper asks.

“Nope. Apparently, the deal is taking longer to close than he anticipated, and he’s heading into a meeting. He claims that he tried to call Audrey to tell her, but she didn’t answer and that he won’t be able to answer while in his meeting when she calls him.”

“Damn,” Jasper mutters.

“This day is going to suck.”

“Audrey’s chill,” he tells me.
