What’s not confusing is how I feel. I want February Frost as much as I want my next breath. Which means I’m going to need to let her in a little more if I want her to let me in.

“Would you like to sit outside?”

“I’d like that.”

She follows me out the sliding glass door into the backyard. My parents liked to entertain, and this yard is evidence of that. The large in-ground pool, with a slide and hot tub. The large outdoor kitchen with concrete counters and stools so people can sit and eat. And, of course, the huge outdoor bar area. Large neon signs, a fully stocked bar, and enough seating around the bar to accommodate all their friends. There’s even a small stage where karaoke or live bands would play. It’s the first stage I played on when I got enough balls to sing in front of people.

It’s a yard I’d build if I ever sold this place.

“Wow, this is amazing,” she says, spinning around to take it all in.

“Thanks.” I lead her to the bar and she sits down on one of the stools. “I’ll be right back.”

I rush inside and race upstairs to grab my guitar. I’ve been itching for someone to hear me play. It’s been a while.

I step outside, and she’s behind the bar, checking it out. When she notices me, she jumps a bit. “Sorry, I was just looking.”

I chuckle as I run my hand through my hair. “Don’t apologize, you’re allowed to check anything out you want.” I move close to her ear and whisper, “As long as you aren’t trying to spy again.”

I can see the blush creep up her neck as I step back and it gives me a bit of confidence, knowing I do affect her in some way.

“Are you gonna play me something?”

“Yep.”

“Should I sit down?”

I grin as I step onto the small stage. “You can be anywhere you want.”

She chooses to stand in front of the stage, and it causes my pulse to race. I’m never nervous when I’m up on stage. It’s an adrenaline rush that I crave. Even if it’s for an audience of one.

I don’t waste any time. I stare at her as I strum a few cords. I’ve written a bunch of my own songs, but tonight I play one that no one has heard. I wrote it after my dad died and it’s all about love, heartbreak, and moving on.

As I sing the haunting lyrics, our eyes collide. My heart races as I continue to sing as my fingers slide against the strings of my guitar. I don’t break eye contact and neither does she. I can see the emotions in the depths of her eyes and it feels good to know she feels the music like I do.

“It’s never goodbye.” I sing the last line and sling my guitar behind my back. Our eyes are still locked as I step off the stage.

“Harrison, that was unbelievable. You’re so talented and that song was beautifully heartbreaking,” she whispers, poking her tongue out to wet her lips.

I move closer and feel the confidence I’ve been lacking around her grab hold. I grin as I slide my fingers into her silky hair. “I’m gonna kiss you, February.”

She wets her lips again and I take that as my invitation. I press my lips against her and it’s goddamn electric. My fingers tighten in her hair as my other hand wraps around her back, pulling her against me. Her arms rest on my shoulders and I deepen the kiss.

She tastes even better than I imagined and now that I’ve gotten a taste, there’s no going back. February Frost is mine, whether or not she realizes it yet.

Chapter 11

February

“And then he kissed me,” I say, staring into the gray eyes of my best friend.

“And what did you do?” she asks me, with her eyes already glazing over.

I shake my head, not wanting her to get the wrong idea. “Nothing. Nothing happened. I thanked him for dinner and I left. As quickly as possible.”

Lennon waves off my statement. “Tell me about the kiss.”

I stop, my mind going back to the moment Harrison actually kissed me. “I think it was the song,” I start. “It was so moving. And, oh my god, his voice.” I smile, trying my best not to look like a lovestruck teenager. “After he sang that song and stepped off the stage in his backyard, I was swept up in the moment.” How could I turn away from that? My heart was racing. Everything inside me was screaming yes, kiss him.

However, now it’s telling me to pump the brakes.

“It’s okay to get swept up in the moment, Feb.”

I shake my head. “No, I won’t allow it. I’ve got way too much going on right now. And besides, look what happened with Drake. I won’t let myself be that stupid again.”
