“Stay safe.”

“See you in a few.”

My phone vibrates again when I’m in my truck, this time from Major.

ETA?

5 I reply, taking care not to floor the gas until I’m out of sight of Rowan’s house.

When I get to the house, Ace is at the front door, waiting.

“Hell of a time to have a house full of people,” he comments.

“No shit.”

A set of headlights flashes around the corner, cutting off as the truck coasts up the driveway. “What the fuck?”

“That any way to greet your superiors?” Max and Robbie materialize from around bushes as Finn steps out of the truck.

Talon and Major appear at the door, eying the men. “This is you?”

“Somewhere secure?” Robbie cuts to the point.

“Media room is secure, but the house is full of people. Didn’t know we were having a party,” Talon answers dryly.

“Not a party when it takes me out of bed with my pregnant wife,” Robbie. counters. “We have a situation.”

“Obviously.” I motion to the side of the house. “Pool house is empty. Do we need equipment?”

“I have it covered.” Finn holds up a duffle bag. “Let’s roll.”

We head to the pool house without a word.

Finn makes quick work of setting up his laptop. There’s a chorus of hums when we recognize the advanced device he links into for a secure connection.

“What the hell is going on?” My attention is on high alert, knowing this type of setup is used in hyper-confidential military operations.

“In approximately six hours, FBI, SWAT, NMPD, and Hayes Security will be in position to accept a range of shipments. Drugs, weapons, possible human trafficking—the interception could be the largest in Nashville history,” Robbie explains.

“Interstates, air space, railway, and the port are all involved.” Finn takes over, motioning to the map of the city already outlined with location identifiers.

“Fucking hell. How did Hayes get caught up in this?” Talon bends in to examine the screen closer.

“FBI requested Dad to work this.”

“You said accept and intercept. What does that mean?” I process his words.

“We’re letting them go.”

“The fuck?”

“This has been an operation in play for months. We just got read-in recently. The theory is Nashville is being tested as a hub. We’re operating on the assumption there will be a transfer plan to distribute around the city.”

“So, drugs, guns, and possibly humans being forced here are being released into the city?”

“Not exactly. Once the shipments are here, there are teams assigned to trace and track. End game is to seize once we know where they are going and who’s bankrolling.”

“If all goes to plan,” I concur.

“All will go to plan. That’s why you’re here. We want you on our team.”

“We’re NMPD,” Major informs him sharply.

“You’ve been re-assigned for a little while. Unless you’re not interested?”

Asshole is goading me. “Captain Boyd approved this?”

“Reluctantly,” Max chuckles.

“I’m in,” Ace throws out. “This fucking shit is not taking over my city.”

The four of us have an unspoken conversation. “We’re all fucking in.” I stare at the screen, itching to get my hands on the intel.

“One hour at the offices, 626 will get you into the underground garage. We’ll get you outfitted then.”

We all crack a grin at his last statement. It’s been a while since we’ve needed anything besides our service guns.

The familiar adrenaline winds its way up my spine and my mindset clicks into place.

“Let’s take these fuckers out.”

ROWAN

All the words on the paperwork are a jumbled mess of letters. I’ve been trying to read through the specifics for the last thirty minutes with no luck. The folder is pried out of my hands, and I peer into my dad’s concerned eyes.

“Ro, he’s trained in this.”

“It’s been twelve hours with no word.”

I stare absently at the television, which has been on the local news channel all day.

Nothing.

It’s been hours since our last group text.

Finn’s wife, Presley, and Ember reached out this morning, checking in. Jewls and Harley were next. All of them have experience in this area. This is my first time being completely in the dark about where and what Ford is doing.

It didn’t occur to me that Ford would be with all the guys.

“Max lives in North Carolina.” I speak into the room.

“We know.”

“Why would he be here unless something is really wrong?”

Dad glances over my shoulder and, in less than a second, Mom is scooting next to me on the sofa.

“Sweetie, maybe you should try to rest.”

My head snaps to her like she’s lost her mind. “Rest?”

She studies me and grins sadly. “Bad suggestion. How about you call the girls and invite them over? I’ve made enough food for everyone.”

My gaze goes to the kitchen counter, which is covered in dishes.

Guilt slithers through me. “I’m sorry, Mama. I should have been helping.”

“Nonsense. You’ve been working with your dad.”

More guilt sets in. Dad has done most of the work while I fretted. The only time he had my full attention was when we stopped by the salon. I gave him the samples, and we went over some new formulas. “Dad, I’ve wasted almost our entire day.”
