‘And you didn’t let me know that you were here, why?’ This is the first time since my birth that he’s travelled here. As far as I know he’s not too fond of this planet. One of the reasons I hide out here or he’d knit pick my ass to death about princely behavior.

‘Had I let you know you would’ve been up to one of your tricks and I wouldn’t know what I now know.’

‘What do you know?’ I held my breath afraid I already knew.

‘Bring my great grandson home, earth is no place for him.’ He left as swiftly as he came.

Shit, he’s the last person I wanted to know about her pregnancy. I looked over at her now, so relaxed now that she knew her sisters were okay and felt just a pang of empathy for her. Her life as she knew it is about to come to an end. She’s not going to get the few months I’d wanted to give her before taking her to my kingdom.

I walked over and stood behind her with my hands on her shoulders. “Ladies!” I acknowledged them. I’d forgotten that damn annoying bird until her started screeching in my head. ‘

‘You dirty rat, what did you do?’

‘Stew, a nice bubbling pot of stew!’

He took to the sky, screeching bloody murder like his ass was on fire and it very well might be if he keeps fucking around with me.

Sabrina

He’s coming home; Lucien will be here any day now. And from the talk around the dinner table last night his stay this time will be much longer than the norm. I got the feeling though that there was something more than the nuptial ceremony in the works, something the others hadn’t shared with me but had kept amongst each other.

Not for the first time I was reminded that I was an outsider, that no matter what I do I will never truly be one of them, will never escape the low status of my birth, something I’ve been battling since I was old enough to understand.

Not that I’ve been treated poorly by the royal family of all clans, nothing could be further from the truth; but I’m very aware that there are some things I’m left out of that I wouldn’t have been had I been the real daughter and granddaughter of the family. Then again if I was, I wouldn’t be able to have Lucien as my bedmate.

I’d always hoped that a union between Lucien and I would change that but there was always the knowledge in the back of my mind that it would never happen because of that very lowly status. But now look how happy they are at his union with a much lesser being. She isn’t even one of us. How is it possible that the heir to everything would fall in love with someone like her?

Maybe this imprinting will be different. Maybe by some miracle Lucien won’t feel the deep-rooted love for her that all vampyre have for the women they imprint on. Maybe they won’t form the same unbreakable bond as so many others before them have. All wishful thinking I know, but it’s all I have left to hold onto. That slight hope that maybe she won’t ever touch the part in his heart where he’s always kept me.

I turned my face one way and then the other in the mirror taking in my perfect skin and the beauty that is often commented upon by all. I have no lack of admirers and could’ve given myself to many over the centuries but had restrained myself in hopes of coming to Lucien’s bed pure, untouched. He’s the only man I can ever see myself sharing my love with, and now he belonged to someone else.

The bells had rang out two days ago when the union was consummated safely and the celebrations had begun. No one questioned my sudden bout of illness that kept me from participating in any and all festivities. I’ve suffered much as the adopted daughter of the high prince and his wife, Lucien’s parents, but the one thing I could not bring myself to do is celebrate the fact that the man I love now belonged to another.

Drusilla came in as I sat studying myself in the mirror and I turned to her in haste, dying for any news she might bring. “So, did you learn anything?” From her crestfallen look I knew before she spoke that it had been a pointless venture I’d sent her on.

“Nothing. All anyone would speak of is the prince’s return and the coming ceremonies. If there’s something else going on no one is mentioning a word about it. Are you sure…?”

“Yes, yes, I’m very sure that there’s something that they’re not telling me.” Something that seems to have made them all happy, including the sky monarch who has never smiled in all the years I’ve known him. Not in my presence at any rate.
