Her glare said to not asked any more questions. “Anyway, thank you.” She scooted her chair closer to mine. “You think we can win tomorrow?”

“Who cares? We’re in this together now, right? If we don’t win, there’s always stripping for cash, we could make up each other’s stripper names, might be an adventure. Either way, we do it together.”

“Together.” She agreed. “I like it.”

“Side by side.”

“Ride or die.” She laughed.

“Bury the body and the shovel.”

“Amateur!” She smacked my thigh. “We burn it, we always burn it.”

I snapped my fingers. “Right, right. I’ll just let you stay in charge.”

She held out her hand. I shook it. “And if vampires or aliens exist, you’ll be point on that deal?”

“I’m already prepared.”

“I’ve never been more proud.”

I pulled her closer, her chair scraped across the floor. “I can tell by the stars in your eyes.”

“Oh, that’s the reflection of the kitchen light.”

“Let me dream.”

She leaned in and pressed a kiss to my cheek. “They’re stars—a reflection of you.”

Chapter Twelve

Ace

“The Floor is Lava.” Max said proudly while we all stood in a building next door connected to the hotel. “This is one of the many attractions provided for guests and their families. You have thirty minutes to make it across the desks and couches to get to the end. You can climb the filing cabinets, but they do get slippery and do beware of the boss toward the middle, he drops from the ceiling. Hi Dustin!”

“I hate you,” Dustin yelled from the ceiling.

Max laughed. “He’s fine, he loves this.”

“I hate this!” Dustin yelled again.

“Sorry can’t really hear—“ Max pulled out a horn and squeezed it. “All right, so round one, Bri and Ace, you’ll be first.”

We had to jump from the ledge to either the slippery desk or climb across the edge of the wall to the filing cabinets then jump from there to a couch then the conference table with a minefield of cones where Dustin may or may not interrupt your staff meeting by way of sheer terror.

Hey, props to Max for not putting actual pointy things on the table, that was a win for Dustin, plastic.

“What do you think?” I asked Bri.

She looked to the right, then the left. “I’m lighter, I’ll do the wall and cabinets, you jump on the table and make it to the break room, I’m assuming coffee spills out onto the chairs so be careful when you cross them to the middle, we meet at Dustin, and then take turns grabbing the rope to the end. You can push me since I’m lighter, then you swing twice and jump.”

“Sounds like a plan.”

“We could fail.” Her eyes were unfocused, worried.

I grabbed her hand and kissed it. “Number, oh hell, I’ve lost count, remember, dear sweet love of my life—“

“—There’s always stripping.” She laughed.

I slapped her on the ass. “Atta girl. I knew you were the best office mate.”

“Life mate, office mate, all of it takes place in the trenches.”

“HAVE YOU STARTED YET?” Dustin yelled.

“Yeah, we should press the start button before his body goes numb.” I gave Bri a hug and pressed the button.

I refused to look back at her, I just kept encouraging her while I climbed and nearly slipped off the table into the red dyed water with floating pencils and paper, and oh nice, a few dangling purple staplers from the desk.

“They added the staplers on purpose!” Bri yelled from my right.

I laughed, okay focus. I jumped on the first chair and slipped on the second, nearly falling in, then decided to crawl across to the bar stool, spun around and made it onto the main conference table.

“What the hell is on here?” I slipped and fell to my knees.

Max laughed. “Oh that, it’s KY, more slippery.”

“No shit!” I yelled.

Bri jumped onto the table and slid toward me, her foot nearly kissed my dick in a very unpleasant way.

I exhaled. “That was too close.”

“Imagine telling your friends that you lost a testicle due to KY, your girlfriend, and Max Emory.”

“LOVELY WEDDING STORY!” Max yelled.

“Girlfriend hmm?” I helped her get to her knees. “I was kind of thinking we’re past that point, we’re more at like oh look a ring.”

“Wow, you move fast for an office mate. Dear Sir, we just met!”

“Aw, the perfect southern accent, adorable, sexy, cute, reliable, how did I luck out to have such a hot subordinate?”

“HR, HR!” Max yelled.

I waved him off and kept sliding down the table, it tilted once we got to the end. I was barely able to stop us with my foot against the ledge; we had about a three-foot jump to the final obstacle before swinging to the end.

A loud crack sounded and down came Dustin from the ceiling he was dressed in a grey suit with a fake mustache on his face, no glasses, and had a name tag that said, “Boss.”
