Were chop shops the mob's domain or were they gangs now?
Nope. I didn’t want to know.
Well, I might not have wanted to know the details, but another question flashed through my mind. What did it mean that Emerson had been willing to work with a gang to recuse me from my receptionist?
Did that say more about our relationship or my willingness to put up with ridiculous levels of shit from insane people?
Nope. That question needed time to wander around in my head for a while before I poked at it too hard.
Dinner it was.
“How about we go check out that new Thai place everyone at L and L was talking about the other day?” Yep, we were going to have dinner and then I was going to find a way to ignore how many frightening people my sweet doll seemed to know.
“That sounds wonderful, Owner.” He kissed my cheek and gave me a sweet hug. “Then maybe we can find something pretty to dress me in and we’ll work on your stress levels.”
Nodding, I completely ignored the way he sweetly announced he was going to distract me with playtime and orgasms.
“That sounds like a wonderful plan.”
My sweet doll was fascinating…and a little bit scary.
It was definitely Eli’s fault.
Chapter 23
Emerson
Owner was watching me…and not like I was cute or naughty.
It was slightly disconcerting.
He was studying me.
It would’ve been easier to handle if I was dressed in something cuter and could’ve distracted him better.
I was in jeans.
I wasn’t even pretty at the moment.
It made everything much more difficult.
Okay. I had to start somewhere. I was delightful no matter what I was wearing. Clothes. That would be a good distraction. “What do you think of my trustworthy, white-collar guy look?”
Glancing down at my jeans, I tried not to wince. “I worked in a bank for a few weeks. We had casual Fridays. It was painful, but I learned a lot about so many different kinds of people.”
I hadn’t kept much of that wardrobe…it’d been horrible…but this made me look very boring and wasn’t too ugly.
Owner actually chuckled and leaned back, smiling at me. “It was very impressive. For a few minutes, I was worried I was going to have to figure out how to play with a very professional businessman doll.”
I groaned, shaking my head. “Oh no, that would be…”
Owner nearly giggled.
He delighted in my torment.
“Come on.” His smile turned cheeky and his eyes sparkled. “What’s the closest you would come to a banker doll?”
Ugh. This was my punishment for not telling him about the harpy. Well, at least it was better than him staring at me.
“Hmm, I would be a very cute G.I. Joe.” Even if those pants made my ass look funny, I could still pull it off. “And I think, maybe, Doctor Ken. He’s cute and charming, so it wouldn’t be boring.”
“You would make a delightful G.I. Joe.” Leaning back, his smile faded to something softer but still happy. “You made a very good business partner today. You took charge without being threatening to the police and you kept those lawyers from being assholes.”
Just thinking about them made me groan.
“They were…” Stupid. They’d been stupid. There was no other word for it. “They thought it would all go away with just a wave of their hands and a mention of her daddy’s name.”
We’d made sure that wouldn’t happen and they should’ve known it from the beginning.
Eli was nothing if not thorough.
Owner sighed, not looking as upset as he had earlier. “I just can’t believe she thought they would buy her line of bullshit about me being a kingpin.”
He was sexy, but Owner was not drug kingpin material.
That would be Eli’s job if we were going to run an empire. I would be our spokesperson and Owner could be muscle and make sure we were all dressed appropriately.
“You did not look threatening enough for that.” Just the idea made me roll my eyes. “You looked wonderfully creative and relaxed. Very sexy and snuggly.”
I’d made sure of that when I’d gotten him dressed earlier.
Eli had been worried that Owner might look a bit aggressive if he hadn’t been dressed right, so we’d spent the last few days planning his outfit.
Success was in the details of any operation whether it be a police raid or lingerie shoot.
“Thank you.” Owner’s lips turned up at the edges as he shook his head. “We’re going to talk about these things together going forward, though. I’m very serious about that, pretty one.”
Sighing, I nibbled on my lower lip and tried to look slightly worried. “But sometimes I have to take care of you. Like when you forget to eat. That’s my job and it’s something I take very seriously.”
And honestly, he’d have never let me get Eli involved in all this.
Owner was just too nice and would’ve worried about his friend.
