“This room is so cute,” Lex says as we go to step into the hall.

“I hope he likes it.”

“He will. I know he will. This is a nice house.”

“Come, I’ll give you the tour. You hungry?”

“No, not right now. I do want to see the rest of the house though.”

I nod and grab her hand to link our fingers together. Everyone’s gone now. It’s time I have a real talk with my wife.

However, my stomach rolls as I think of what I might learn. I’ve already been betrayed by this woman. I’ve made myself get over it once. I don’t think I can do that again.

Our reunion may be over faster than the time we spent together as a married couple. A part of me wants to leave that door closed, but that’s not me. I plan to figure out what’s going on so I can protect my son.

If Lex still deserves my protection when all is said and done, I’ll be there for her too. She gives my hand a squeeze, pulling me from my thoughts. I clear my throat and focus on the room I’ve opened the door to.

“This is the other guest bedroom on this level. There are two more upstairs.”

“This one is a nice size too. I wasn’t expecting that. AJ’s room is pretty big as it is.”

I nod and lead her out of the room to head to the kitchen. She tugs at my hand and halts me. I turn to look down at her.

“Is that the master?” She points back at the double doors to my bedroom.

“Yeah, I thought I’d show it to you last.”

“That’s not necessary. It’s been a long day. I can find my way to the kitchen later,” she replies with a smile on her lips.

I turn and head down the hall to the bedroom I’ll finally get to share with my wife. I felt crazy when I bought this place with her in mind. Now, I’m glad I followed my heart, or at least, I’m happy I did for now.

As I open the door and she steps inside, I war with myself, wondering if I should take her to the living room for our talk. I should just tear the Band-Aid off now. Although, the moment she turns to me after looking around, I know I’m going to do no such thing.

For tonight, I want to live the dream. I want to treat Lex the way I planned to treat her when I asked her to marry me. Before she was stolen from my life.

I follow her to the master bath and watch her take it all in. She spins in a circle as her smile grows. She looks great in my space.

My phone grabs my attention with a text. I pull my phone out to check in case of an emergency. It’s a text from Skittles.

Skittles: I thought you might need this. It’s perfect. Listen to the words.

Skittles: Make me proud, Ox.

Skittles: She’s home and she loves you. That’s all that matters.

There’s a song attached to the first message. I smile at the phone and look up at Lex. She’s watching me closely.

“I want to freshen up. You can take your call if you need to. Do you mind bringing my bags in? That is if you want me to stay in your room. I can go back to the other one if you want.”

With my eyes locked on hers, I close the distance between us. I cup her face and tilt it back before I take her lips. I nip at the bottom one then the top. She grasps my hands and holds me to her.

“I’ve waited what feels like all my life for this night. You’ll be in your bed where you belong tonight. I’ll get your things. Just give me a sec to see what Skittles texted me,” I say as I look down into her eyes.

“Okay, thanks.”

I kiss her nose and release her before I turn to get her bags. I press play on the song Skittles sent as I get to the front of the house and pause in front of Lex’s bags.

The song is named “I Choose You,” and the artist is Ryan Leslie. From the first line, it hits home. I keep listening and nod my head. She’s right. For tonight, this says what I feel and all I need to say.

Lex has a deep love for music. When we were together, she used music to set our moods and to change mine. She always had the perfect song to get me out of a funk.

I get to the end of the song, pocket my phone, and grab her things. Not able to help myself, I stop to peek in on AJ one last time. He’s fast asleep, looking like a little angel.
