Daisy twirled around in a circle, letting her skirt flow out before she waved at Evan. “Hi, Evan.” She turned toward her friend. “This is Sue. She works with Tori.”

Tori wandered closer and hugged her friends. “What are you two doing here?”

Daisy shrugged. “It’s a nice day. We were both on our break, so we came out to the park.”

Evan reached a hand out toward Sue. “Nice to meet you, Sue. You weren’t in the cupcake shop when I came in the other day.”

“Nice to meet you too.” She blinked at him in awe, which reminded Evan that Ellie had said Sue would be jealous when she found out she missed him. “I love your work.”

“Thank you.” He nodded toward Tori. “The subject matter for today’s photoshoot isn’t quite as stationary,” he teased. “She keeps moving around, but the pictures are amazing.”

Daisy clapped her hands together. “I love it. I can’t wait to see the pictures.”

Tori shook her head. “Oh, no. They’re just for me. And,” she licked her lips, glanced at Evan, and then whispered, “Daddy.”

Evan’s heart beat faster. It was huge and telling that she’d called him that in front of her friends.

“Besides, we won’t even be able to see my face in them. I can’t keep my curls off my cheeks.” She tucked a lock behind her ear, but it fell right back across her pink cheek.

“Oh,” Sue exclaimed. “Maybe I can help.” She had a good-sized bag over her shoulder and she dropped to her knees on the blanket and opened it up, rummaging for a few moments before lifting up a pair of hairclips with pink bows on them. “Will these help? They totally match what you’re wearing.”

Evan reached for the clips. “Those are perfect. Thank you, Sue. Come here, Curls.”

Tori stepped closer.

Evan tucked the clips between his lips before he grabbed a lock of curls from one side of Tori’s face, twisted it around a few times, and then held it against her head near the top. After plucking one of the clips from between his lips, he fastened the lock of curls securely and then did the same to the other side.

When he stepped back, the other two ladies nodded their approval.

“That’s perfect,” Daisy exclaimed. “You look so pretty. I love pink on you and the little bows are adorable.” She clapped her hands together again.

“I agree,” Sue stated.

“What else do you have in that bag?” Daisy teased. “You’ve saved the day!”

Sue smiled. “Glad I can help.”

Tori gave her a hug. “Thank you so much. I’ll be sure to get them back to you next time I’m at work.”

Sue shrugged. “Don’t even worry about it. They’re just hairclips. I have tons of them. Those suit you better than me. You should keep them.”

“We have to get back to work.” Daisy grabbed Sue’s arm and dragged her away. “We can’t wait to see the pictures later,” she shouted over her shoulder.

Evan watched the girls—and he was pretty sure now that Sue was also Little—as they walked away before glancing back at Tori who was still staring at their retreating backs.

“What are you thinking, pretty girl?” he asked as he cupped Tori’s cheek.

“I’m thinking Sue is very mysterious. She’s kind of quiet at work. Nicest person ever, but reserved. I’m not sure any of us know her well, but I certainly didn’t expect her to have pink hairclips in her bag. Or any hairclips at all. I’ve never seen her wear them. Usually she kind of hides behind her hair like she doesn’t want anyone to notice her.”

“Ah. Well, you never know. Maybe she just likes being prepared.”

Tori nodded slowly. “Have you ever seen her at Blaze?”

He shook his head. “I haven’t but I wouldn’t tell you if I had, Little one. Membership is very personal. I’m hoping you will be willing to go there with me one of these days, especially since most of your friends are members.” He’d been meaning to bring it up several times. Now was the perfect opportunity.

“Maybe. It wouldn’t be so scary if you were with me.”

He grinned. “I promise it’s not scary at all. One of these days, I’ll take you, and you’ll see.” He pointed toward some pink flowers. “Now, back to the photo shoot. Go smell the flowers, Curls. I want some action shots.”

She giggled as she skipped toward the pink buds, and Evan didn’t think he’d ever taken better pictures in his entire life. When he looked through the viewfinder, he saw pure joy and happiness. Love.

He didn’t usually take pictures of people, but his Little girl was very photogenic. He was confident from now on he would often have a memory card filled with pictures of Tori. He would need to warn his assistant so she didn’t wonder who on earth the woman was in the photos and accidentally use them on the website or something.
