Jade’s hair fell around her in waves, and he also noted she had put her glasses on today. He figured she wore contacts when she went to work. She looked so sexy.
When he left her in bed, she’d been naked. Now she had on an old, faded shirt and a pair of pajamas.
“I expected you to be gone,” she said.
“I had every intention of leaving.” There was no point in lying.
“Oh,” she said.
“Enjoy your breakfast.”
“I had fun last night.” Her stomach growled.
“And the next time, I’m going to make sure I feed you. Now, eat your breakfast.”
“You’re always so bossy,” she said, wrinkling her nose.
He winked at her. He was used to getting what he wanted. Normally, he wasn’t quite so nice about it. Often, he had to use his fists or feet. Then of course, he would also have to use his special equipment to get whatever crap he wanted out of people. All in good time, though.
“You’re hungry. Don’t worry, this won’t happen again.”
He knew what he had done and from the surprise on Jade’s face, she knew it as well. There shouldn’t be a next time. There wasn’t going to be any kind of next time. He had to leave. The closer he got to her, the more her life was in danger. He wasn’t a good man. He was a bad man and he did a lot of bad things.
“It’s set to get colder,” Jade said.
The weather.
“Is this like your cleaning?” he asked.
She nodded her head.
“Then yes, it is set to get colder.” His cell phone buzzed in his pocket, and he pulled it out to see a set of instructions. One glance at the cell, and he knew what he needed to do for the day.
“Do you have to go to work?” she asked.
He gave a quick nod of the head.
“Right, so I should wish you on your merry way after breakfast,” she said.
He looked up to see her smiling. This was going to be his last time with her.
Picking up his black coffee, he took a sip. He didn’t do cream or sugar, only black.
Staring at her, he took in his fill. He didn’t know what it was about Jade, but he didn’t care. Last night was the only night he was going to grant himself, and this breakfast. It was why he allowed her to know his name, as he wasn’t going to grant her anything else.
Braxton already had the means to help her. As he was making breakfast, he had already transferred some funds to help her out. He’d keep a close eye on her, and until he was satisfied she was okay, he’d take care of her. This was going to be his last time with her.
After breakfast, Jade thanked him for the food, and then rubbed her stomach. “Thank you.” She went to him and kissed him. She stroked his cheek.
He was surprised she wasn’t disgusted by his scars, but they didn’t seem to bother her. Most women were repulsed.
Jade lingered and then she stepped away. There was no promise of seeing each other later, as there wasn’t going to be a later. He didn’t know if she knew that. The truth was, this was never going to work. Jade deserved better.
She walked out of the kitchen, and then he got to his feet and left.
Stepping out of the apartment, he immediately went to the shadows, going several streets away to where he had parked his car. Climbing inside, he pulled out his cell phone, looked over the details, and then deleted the message. He never left any trace of evidence.
He drove away, and made his way in the direction of the next job. The text had come from one of the city gangsters. The city was a big dark place, and there were a lot of spaces for people to hide. There was also a large area for a lot of bad men.
This took him to the opposite side of the city, far away from Jade, which is what he wanted. He didn’t want any of his life touching her. She had to live a life free from his.
Jade didn’t need to know the true monsters that lurked in the alleys or under cover of darkness. He was one of them.
Braxton knew he had to forget about her. He didn’t need to keep seeing her smiling face, or the look in her eye as she was close to orgasm. Or, how she nibbled her lip to contain her pleasured moans. He pushed it all to the back of his mind, and now he just needed to deal with the work at hand.
This was the life he’d made for himself. There was no backing out, no leaving it behind.
Chapter Seven
The days passed and before long it had been a week since she last saw Braxton. Jade didn’t want to look at the time. Lucille was talking about her weekend with her husband and children. Jade tried to stay focused, nodding and smiling, being the nice employee who took an interest in her boss’s social life. But she couldn’t stop thinking about Braxton.
