We pull up in front of Lucas’ club to find him standing out front, his foot tapping impatiently as he waits for us. He offers me a sly smile, and I know he’s going to say something to piss me off because that’s who he is. He likes to ruffle feathers because his are hardly ever ruffled.

“Ran into your wife today.” When I don’t say anything, he continues, “Asked her how the fucking was going between you two. She wasn’t forthcoming on the subject, so I’m going to ask you, cousin. How is it fucking someone who prefers to have pussy over cock?”

And that’s all it takes for me to step toward him. I want to strangle him so that relentlessly smug expression vanishes from his face, but I have a feeling even as I’m choking him, he would still be smiling because that’s the type of fucking asshole he is.

“Where my cock goes is none of your fucking concern, Lucas. You should know better.”

Kier shakes his head and walks straight past us. And, of course, we’re going to follow, like we always do.

Lucas waves his hand for me to go in first, and as I do, he whispers, “She’s a little firecracker, that one. I’d watch out that she doesn’t slit your throat when you sleep, just like she did to her father.”

I should look into that. I mean, she told me she killed her father, but what was the reason behind it? Will she even tell me? Does Lucas know? Not sure I want to ask him to find out the truth.

“Joey?” I’m surprised to see an old school friend, Perry, sitting at a table inside. I don’t particularly socialize with anyone other than my family any longer because it’s safer that way. There’s less betrayal, fewer people being killed.

His eyes brighten as he stares at me, hope shining through them. “Joey, it is you. Fuck, help me get out of here.”

Lucas and Keir both turn to me. Lucas starts to laugh, and it’s then that Perry’s face changes, and he realizes I’m not there to save him. It’s like recognition floods his face, and he realizes who he’s speaking to.

“I didn’t think...” Perry shakes his head. “You didn’t want nothing to do with this life in school.” He’s right, of course, but when my brother became boss, that was a different story.

“Things change, Perry. I changed.” I don’t even bother asking why he’s here, tied to a chair in the back room of Lucas’ club because I already know the answer. There are only one or two reasons they would be back here, and it’s usually to do with money. Perry liked flashy things back in the day when we were in school, so I have a feeling that hasn’t changed the older he’s gotten, especially by the looks of his Gucci shirt.

“He told me everything I needed to know,” Lucas tells me.

Perry goes to cut him off, but he doesn’t get a chance because I raise my gun and shoot him directly between the eyes. His head lolls back, blood and brain matter splatters everywhere, and Lucas swears. He shakes his head because he was an idiot for standing too close.

“Next time, don’t bring dipshit when he hasn’t gotten laid,” Lucas says to Keir before he walks off, leaving my brother and me standing there with Perry’s lifeless body.

Kier looks at me. “You better come back from this fucking holiday ten times better.” He shakes his head and walks off the same way Lucas did, throwing over his shoulder, “And fuck your damn wife.”

TWENTY-TWO

ADORA

We boarded a private plane this morning to take us to our destination. I can’t say I’ve been on one until today. Joey has hardly spoken to me, and we’re already hours into our flight. It’s awkward. He didn’t come home again last night, and this time I didn’t sleep on the couch, instead choosing his bed. And when I woke, his side wasn’t even touched.

I had heard the door slam early this morning and then his heavy footsteps as he entered the room, still dressed in the outfit he left in yesterday.

“Do you plan to talk to me?” His eyes are closed in his seat, but I know he’s not asleep. “Not sure how this vacation is meant to go if you plan on not speaking to me.”

“Do you like cock?” His eyes open, finding mine already on him.

“W-What?” I stutter, completely caught off guard by the question.

He’s asking me this now.

“Do you like cock or… is it only pussy that does it for you?” I realize I still haven’t answered him as his eyes search my face for the truth.

“I’ve been with both men and women if that is what you’re asking.” He doesn’t blink, doesn’t even move, he simply stares at me. “Did you think I don’t like cock?”
