“I can’t arrest someone just because we think it’s them. We have no evidence.” He motions to Dan, the head of my old security team—since Ammo fired him not that long ago—who is talking to a police officer.

“Whoever did this was familiar enough with the layout of the house, your team, et cetera. They cut the power, so as of now, we’re at the mercy of your neighbors’ camera. But don’t worry, we will go through everything.” He looks at me, then Ammo, as Rafe stands, arms crossed standing in his silver suit.

“Yeah, I want to see all their footage,” Ammo states as if it’s a no brainer, and Rafe nods.

“Not that we don’t trust the LAPD, but this concerns numerous people.” Rafe’s eyes narrow in on the detective. There’s a reason he has the reputation as being ruthless.

I mean, I wouldn’t want to be on Rafe’s bad side, I muse, sipping whiskey. Actually, it’s so smooth I’m full-on drinking it.

“Courtney’s staying with me,” Ammo snaps, bringing my eight-hundred-dollar bottle of whiskey to his lips and drinking it.

“Listen, all of you I’m sure have good intentions, but you need to let us do our jobs,” the detective states, then sighs.

“Look, I’ll personally go by Zane’s apartment, but these photos are up close, and some are even inside Ms. Falcon’s house. They don’t match Zane’s photos he took before he went to prison.”

“Well then, he’s either fine-tuning his craft or it’s someone else. Either way, I want heads to roll,” Ammo snarls and my pussy instantly throbs because he’s not only hot, he’s freaking powerful. I can’t look away. I just sit and watch him set down the bottle, then reach for his pack of cigarettes.

“I don’t understand how he got in here.” Rachel’s voice makes me jump. Clearly, I’m really on edge as Ammo’s strong hand caresses my hair. She frowns at me as she blows smoke up into the air.

“Maybe you let him in.” Ammo sneers as he turns to her, and Rachel just stares at him. I don’t even think she blinks. God, how can she do that?

“Again, as soon as we know more, I’ll let you know.” The detective clears his throat, indicating that this conversation is over.

“Where’s the book? And the pictures, I’d like to take a look at them.” Malcolm walks in, his red hair standing up. Poor sweet Malcolm, who hired my security and now feels responsible if the state of his hair is any indication.

“Forensics has it in the van. It’s evidence right now, so they’ll hold it for at least ninety days.”

“I need to see it also.” I jump up, and all eyes turn to me.

“Why?”

“Because there might be a message, a clue…something.” My voice cracks as Ammo watches me like I’m a precious doll, or maybe one of his guitars he doesn’t let anyone touch.

“Go, before they leave, although I’m not sure they’ll even let you see it.” The detective shrugs as I walk over to Malcolm.

“Court, I don’t know about this.” He sighs and glances at Ammo, then takes my arm and walks me a few feet away. “I want to take a look first because I remember vividly Zane’s photos from the last time, and this might be a trigger for you.” His voice is soft and almost fatherly, which might be the worst voice to hear right now.

“I should look. If I don’t it will drive me crazy. I didn’t even register anything when I opened that box besides pure terror.” Looking up at the ceiling because I refuse to burst into tears, I continue, “This has to be Zane, right? I mean, I can’t have two lunatics running around my house?” I say as I feel Ammo behind me. I don’t even need to turn, the connection we have is simply there, out of my control.

What the hell?

“Let’s look.” Ammo tosses his cigarette into the sink, taking my hand as Malcolm walks with me.

“What do you think?” Malcolm asks as he runs his hand through his hair again.

“I think she’s staying with me until we find this sick fuck,” Ammo states as I blink at how dark it is outside. Jesus, it feels like only seconds have gone by, and yet I guess it’s been hours.

“Watch your step.” Ammo guides me around what looks like cables coming out of the forensic truck as Malcolm knocks on the van.

“You okay?” His warm hand is under my chin, comforting me because suddenly I’m not sure I want to see what the stalker left.

“Courtney?” His voice is like a caress as my eyes dart to his.

“Yes, it’s just kind of surreal, you know? Like I don’t understand—” I stop talking as the door slides open, and a man who looks like he’s on an episode of CSI steps out.

“Detective Kirby said we could look at the pictures and the book,” Malcolm informs him as he looks at all of us like we’re a major inconvenience. Clearly, he’s not a fan of either one of us, so much for star power.
