But I know he won’t.
This has all been a fairytale, only without the happy ending.
“Let’s sit down and talk,” I say.
We make our way to the living room, and I take a seat on the leather couch. He chooses the loveseat across from me. It hurts knowing he doesn’t want to sit next to me, but I can’t blame him.
If I were in his shoes, and he had lied to me, I’d be furious.
“I believe it’s Brandon,” I say once we’re all settled.
Devereaux clenches his fists. “Fucking asshole. Why do you think that?”
“He’s behind the prostitution ring with the Greedy Girls. Sugar is in on it too. Apparently, Ginger was trying to quit and Brandon was getting irritated with her.”
“Go arrest him.”
“We want this to stick. We can’t arrest him without more evidence. Him being irritated with one of the girls doesn’t mean he’d kill her.”
He scrubs a hand over his face. “Yeah, I guess.” He bounds from the loveseat. “I’ll make him confess.”
I stand. “You can’t do that. Let us do our job.”
He laughs at that. “Your job? Is that what you’ve been doing so far? Sleeping in my bed?”
“You’re an asshole.”
He never breaks eye contact. “What do you call it then?”
I release a deep breath. “I’m sorry, Devereaux. I got caught up in it all. I got caught up in you. I know you’re upset with me, but you can’t go after Brandon.”
“Why not?”
“Because, you could get yourself killed.”
He scoffs. “Don’t act like you care about me.”
“I do care about you. I don’t want to see anyone else get hurt.”
“So, you’re going to go after him? You think that’s wise?”
I nod. “It’s my job.”
“What about you getting hurt in the process? I’m not letting you go after this guy.”
I shake my head. “It’s my job, and I can handle myself.”
“This is fucked up. I still can’t believe you’ve been a cop this whole time.”
“Devereaux,” I say, my voice a lot calmer now. “You have to promise me you won’t go after him. I don’t need you getting yourself hurt.”
“Yeah, sure,” he says. “Now, you need to leave.”
Tears well in my eyes, threatening to fall any minute, so I nod, and gather my things. As I leave his house, sadness washes over me and I rush to my car so he can’t see me cry. Hopefully, he doesn’t go after Brandon.
I guess I’ll just have to go after him first.
Chapter 40
Devereaux
* * *
It feels like my heart just walked out of this house. She’s a detective. I never knew they had it in them to send an undercover like her into my club. I’ve lived in Saint Pierce all of my life, and I’ve never seen a cop as beautiful as Chloe.
I’m pissed at myself. I should have known the police force would send someone to investigate my club. I was too distraught over the murders to think clearly.
Maybe I’m still not thinking clearly.
But I plan on talking to Brandon. How can I not?
I trusted this shady motherfucker, had him running my security at my club, and he betrayed me.
Sugar too.
I call Roman and fill him in on everything and tell him to meet me at Club Greed. Once he gets over the shock of finding out Chloe was undercover, he says he’ll call Ledger and tell him to meet us there. I hang up and hop in my car. This ends tonight.
I won’t let Brandon and Sugar get away with murdering my girls. And I won’t let Brandon hurt Chloe or use her as a pawn in his prostitution ring.
She’s mine to protect. I know she’s a detective, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’m in love with her and don’t want anything to happen to her.
I slow my car as I think about my feelings for the woman who’s been lying to me.
She probably never cared about me at all.
It was all one-sided.
Even though we are over, and will never be together, I still have to make sure she doesn’t get herself killed. Brandon’s a dangerous man, and I need to take him down. Once and for all.
When I pull up to the club, Roman’s already standing near the front entrance.
“Ledger should be here in a few,” he says as I step out of my car.
“Good.”
We enter the club, and Adele stops her conversation with a member to head our way. I ignore her smile and keep walking.
“Devereaux, what’s going on?” she asks, rushing behind us because we’re charging through this place like a bat outta hell.
I don’t bother answering her, my eyes seeking out Brandon instead.
Ledger appears beside us, telling her we’ll explain later.
“Dev?” Adele is still asking. “What’s going on?”
“Where’s Brandon?” I roar.
Adele’s eyes pop open like an owl. “He’s in the VIP rooms. With Sugar. The roleplay room.”
Roman, Ledger, and I head in that direction. I glance over at the servers in the side station as I make my way toward the red rope that leads to the VIP rooms. Raven’s not behind the bar and it makes me wonder where she is on a busy night like tonight.
