She was moved by his words, but his anger filled the room like dark water in a clear glass. He felt insulted and furious after his discussion with Billy. His lovemaking was focused yet with an edge to it. He’d given her so many explosive orgasms she’d lost count. She replayed those moments as she made her way to Havana Street, the prison that housed Irish Wilde.

When she’d almost made it there, her cellphone rang. Archer. She smiled and took the call.

“Hey, honey. I’m almost there if that’s what you’re calling about.”

“No, I, uh, wanted to clear something up.” She could hear men speaking around him, as well as the sounds of forklifts.

“Oh, what’s that?” She reached for her can of Sprite and took a sip.

“I could’ve squeezed Irish in today, tried to get her myself, but—it’s hard to explain—something in me told me not to rush to get her. She deserves a better welcome than what I could give. You’re the one I trust. You’re the one I knew would bring her home right.”

She set her can down and began reading the signs—in more ways than one.

“So you’re saying you intentionally set me up? You wanted me to go and get Irish all along?” She chuckled.

“Not exactly, I’m just saying I didn’t have anyone else go get her because I want this for her. For you. She and I were talking last month, before I knew of the change of her release date, and she said some things that reminded me about where we came from, and where we’re going. I told her about you… who you were… I told her everything, baby. Irish has been the only person on this planet to truly understand me. And now, I’ve got you.”

“She understands you because y’all both crazy.”

He laughed at that. “Yeah, that too. She’s a lil crass but she’s my sister, and I love her. Anyway, I’ll see you tonight. Love you.”

“I love you too, baby. See you later.”

She disconnected the call and tightened her grip around the steering wheel. He’d said so much, yet left a lot out, too. Her mind began to wander. Archer was a deep thinker, so whatever he had up his sleeve had to have been there for a while. He wasn’t the impulsive type. That was how she knew she was loved by him. He’d taken the time to ascertain his feelings. She pulled into the visitor’s carline at the prison, and bided her time. A few minutes passed, and she finally went to the kiosk.

“Welcome. Name?” a middle-aged officer asked, adjusting his glasses on his face while holding a tablet in his other hand.

“I’m Honey Brooks. Here to pick up Irish Wilde.” When I say our names together, it sounds like the stars of a dirty movie.

He looked over his rims at her, a hint of suspicion in his eyes, then cleared his throat.

“Okay, I see you here.” He peered at the tablet. “I.D. please.” She reached in her purse, pulled out her identification and handed it to him. He looked it over, flipped it, then glared at her. “Oh, boy. An out-of-towner. It’s always somethin’. Says you’re from California.” He has an attitude. Here we go…

“Yes. Yes it does.” And, motherfucker?

“What are ya doing in Denver?”

Taking pictures of your wife screwing the pool boy.

“Here on business, but this trip is for a friend and not business-related.”

“Hmmm. I see.” I bet you do with those thick ass glasses. He checked her ID once more, then handed it back. “I see that Ms. Wilde was initially supposed to be picked up by a Mr. Wilde… a Mr. James Wilde.” Oh, good. You can read. Bond. James Bond. The hell?

“Correct. He called and got the approval for me to come instead. He got busy with work.” Something you should be doing. Working, instead of holding up the line. “Hmmm. Nice car. This yours?” Bitch…

“Sir, may I please just pick up the young lady so we can be on our way?” She pointed ahead, in case he’d forgotten the way. “Her family is waiting. She’s been in here for several years and they miss her very much.”

He grunted, stood straighter, and rocked back on his heels.

“Ma’am, I need you to relax. No need to become angry.” So now I’m a hysterical woman… “I’m asking these questions because we have to be careful about who comes and goes. Ensure that everyone’s reason for being here is legit.”

“I understand that,” she read his badge, “Officer Dowery. But the car I drive does not guarantee my legitimacy or not, you are not the DMV, and I am crunched for time. This is not my first time at a prison.”

“Oh, no?” He smirked. “I’m sure you’ve been to prison. I could bank on that.” He snickered.

“Well then I suggest you change lenders. I have supplied what you asked for and yet, I am still here at this gate, while Ms. Wilde is waiting to start her new life in the free world. Others are behind me waiting to visit their loved ones, or bring them home as well.”
