“Come on, William, Charlotte, let’s load up. Mom needs a minute with your grams, gramps, and uncle,” I tell the kids. Tulsa always asks if I want to stop and visit my father. We probably would if he weren’t hundreds of miles away, buried in a national cemetery. A place plots, headstones, and the likes may be where their final resting place is, but I’m a firm believer that your loved ones are aways surrounding you.
“Race you, Char!” The kids run ahead of me, twenty or so feet, staying on the grass, stopping when they get to the massive SUV we now need with three kids. I make quick work of opening the back door. The older two climb in, William in the third row, Charlotte behind the driver’s seat in the second row.
“Buckle up. I’ll check on you two out once I get James loaded, alright?” I set James in his infant carrier behind the passenger seat and clasp his harness, making sure it’s tight without being too tight, and because my body calls to Tulsa’s whenever she’s near, I turn around. She’s walking toward us, a soft serene smile on her face, the swish of her sundress bouncing around her thighs, and damn if it doesn’t solidify that she and our kids are fucking everything to me. Montgomery was right. There’s only one man on this earth who could love her the way I do, and I’m the lucky bastard who gets to spend the rest of my life with her.
