“Ffffftttt,” she dismissed. “He didn’t even invite her into his house. He wants you.”

“I don’t know, Nat. I used Kelly’s techniques, but I’m not her. I’m not experienced enough to keep a man like that.”

“You’re totally wrong,” Kelly said. “Men don’t want women with a high body count. If anything, they’re intimidated by such women. Men are simple creatures, far simpler than women, anyway. They just want a sweet girl who responds to them, falls in love with them, and makes them feel they’re special. Take it from me, I should know what I’m talking about, I claimed the title of slut a very long time ago.”

“You’re not a slut,” I said fiercely.

She laughed. “I’ve slept with more than half the single men in this town so, of course, I am, but I’m cool with that. I wear my slut crown with pride.”

“You should. You have no idea how much Cole loved your blowjob technique.”

Kelly laughed and I turned away from her and looked at Cole at that very moment he lifted his head and stared pointedly at me, and even though it was too far for our eyes to meet, I knew that he was seeking me out. Such a small gesture, but it made me feel absolutely divine.

And it made me want to … fuck him.

-you sexy thing-

ME: Do you feel like having sex? Feel free to say no.

I clicked the send button before I could change my mind. I wasn’t sure he would know it was my number because I had called it out to him so fast and there was so much noise around, but even before I’d closed Anya’s file where I found his number, my phone pinged with an answer.

HIM: YES. My place, tonight?

ME: Sorry. Can’t wait that long.

HIM: Name the place and time.

ME: Right now!

HIM: Where are you? (emoji with tongue hanging out)

ME: In the office, but meet me in the storage room. Do you remember where it is?

HIM: Ten-minute walk from here. Four minutes if I run.

ME: Don’t run. We have to be discreet … and quick.

HIM: Discreet? Hard if both of us mysteriously disappear at the same time.

ME: Hard but not impossible.

HIM: Quick check on Anya to make sure she’s gainfully occupied first. See you in 6 minutes. I’ll be walking quickly.

ME: Clock is ticking…

I knew I was behaving in quite an insane way, but I felt quite exhilarated by my new daring self. I locked the office and walked quickly down the corridor. The sight of him in his tight T-shirt had awakened all kinds of needs in me. I didn’t want to … actually, no, I couldn’t wait until tonight.

All in all, it was a great afternoon, and I needed a special memory to go along with it.

The storage room in question was my secret getaway. Behind the cans of food, gardening machinery, spare cooking utensils, and camping equipment was a walled-off narrow space with a window facing the mountain range in the distance. During the cold winter months, their tops would be covered with snow, and I would escape here with a cup of hot cocoa every chance I got. It was a special place of relief to me where I’d never ever been bothered so I couldn’t think of a better place to take him.

One of the parents saw me as I left the office building and made my way towards the store room. I casually waved and he waved back. As long as Cole and I were not seen heading over together it should be fine.

I turned the key in the door and opened it. It was vast inside. Even with sunlight pouring in through the high windows there were many dim corners. Dust motes hung suspended in the rays of light. I had six minutes to kill. There was an old honky-tonk piano along one wall and I walked towards it. I sat on the stool and played a few tunes. Six minutes seemed like a lifetime. My feet tapped impatiently, and I kept glancing at the door until eventually, I heard a sound outside.

"Come in," I called, and the door was pushed open.

I stood and faced him. My heart was pounding so furiously in my chest I could hear it. I felt nervous and excited all at once. I smiled at him, but he didn’t approach me.

"Is there a key?" he asked.

I held up the bunch of keys in my hand. "You seem even more cautious than me.”

He smiled as he advanced. "There are a bunch of inquisitive mommies out there. Do we want to give them any ideas?"

“Nope,” I said, dropping the keys into his upturned palm.

I watched him lock the door and turn around. “Want to do it against the piano?”

He stood in a ray of sunshine, unaware of how beautiful he looked. The dust motes danced around him. His eyes … God, he was heavenly. I was afraid he would smell my utter fascination for him … my desperation.
