I respected my guys, and they respected me back.
When it came to club laws, that was another matter. I had to make and enforce rules, with the help of my inner circle, Jack in particular. Sometimes it was unpleasant. Violence was a big part of it. Kicking the shit out of someone who stepped out of line or an outsider who threatened one of our own. Searing a guy’s tat off when he was kicked out of the club.
Some of it was brutal as fuck.
But we did what we had to do.
We always did what we had to do.
That applied to taking care of our own. That included Drake’s new woman, too. He loved the hell out of her, that much was plain. She was instantly inducted into the inner circle.
Whoever was fucking with her was going to wish they had never been born.
CHAPTER TEN
Kaylie
“Did you make your amazing potato salad?” I asked, my eyes wide with hunger at the feast Sally and Donnie were carrying into the cabin. Dev snuck up behind me and kissed my neck. My mom was hosting the babies at her place. We were practically kid free for the weekend, other than running to town to break feed and pump a couple of times a day. That meant lots of alone time last night.
Earlier this week had been the first time we had been alone since the baby arrived. Once we’d started, we hadn’t wanted to stop. It was like we were teenagers all over again. I smiled to myself in anticipation. We had tonight to ourselves, too. Unless the little ones had some sort of emergency.
“Hungry already?” He teased, his breath brushing my ear. I shivered and blushed, my nipples instantly hard. “Me too,” he added suggestively and I snapped my mouth shut. I knew exactly what he was talking about. He’d spent half the night with his mouth buried between my thighs last night.
My legs felt like jelly. My heart started to beat hard and fast. I was afraid I might start to drool.
I guess postpartum horniness was a real thing, too. I’d known about being, um, easily stimulated when you ovulated and during pregnancy. But apparently I was just ready for my man. All the time.
Either that it my husband just knew how to push my buttons, in the best possible way of course.
I knew I was lucky. More than lucky. I was blessed. My man adored me. He hadn’t gotten bored or started treating me like an old sock. He cherished me. In fact, our love and desire for each other just seems to grow, day after day, year after year.
With my incredibly supportive husband and family of ‘old ladies’, it was not even that exhausting to have a newborn. I could relax and enjoy the time with our baby, and someone would take her for a few hours so I could sleep. Not once or twice a week. Every single day.
Never mind that Mae considered herself a fairy godmother to all her former waitress’ offspring, not just Becky and Whiskey’s kids who were actually blood. She had a whole passel of nieces and nephews from all of us girls.
I’d bounced back from the delivery quickly. In fact, Dev was already whispered about adding to our brood. But for now, I wanted to focus on what we had.
Each other, for starters.
Our family. Our club. Our future.
A future that now included Jan.
The terror of that year of doubt, of not knowing, was never far from my mind. It had taken a toll on all of us. But the relief of knowing she was in remission was a reminder of how miraculous life truly was.
It was hard to be in a bad mood for even a heartbeat when you got your best friend back from the brink of eternity. Janet was our rock. We needed her. I needed her, dammit! And she wasn’t going anywhere for a long, long time.
“What’s their ETA?”
“Why? We don’t want Dana to think we are a chaotic mess?” Sally joked, as she dodged one of Jack and Janet’s redheaded offspring. They were getting big. Teenagers almost, especially the eldest boy.
Why, he’s practically a man, I realized in shock, staring at Jack Jr. as the brawny red headed teenager hefted a massive cooler onto his shoulders with zero effort.
“They just pulled up. Now, let’s get to matchmaking,” Becky crowed, her eyes bright. She lived for this stuff. Not that I didn’t. But this was different. We all had a vested interest in getting Drake settled down.
All the remaining single guys, but especially Drake.
He was kind of a pain in the ass. Most of the guys could behave at family style events. But not Drake. He was as wild as he’d ever been, swilling liquor around the kids, making rude comments, starting fights, and even sometimes showing up with a trail of broken hearted women in trashy outfits in his wake. We loved him, but man was he hard to take sometimes.
