“Laundry. Zipper. Lunch for him that doesn’t involve just a sandwich. Plug in his phone.” There had to be other things I was forgetting, but for a first-time Daddy and caregiver, I thought by the time I went to bed I was doing pretty good.

Well, I was doing good until he started talking in his sleep.

Being woken up from a dead sleep by Milo mumbling to himself was an interesting experience. “Peas…yes. That’s. But mac and cheese. Yes.”

He was hungry?

It probably took me entirely too long to figure out what was going on, but by the time I could see him moving in the darkness and he started to sit up, my brain had connected the dots. “Shh…come here.”

He didn’t seem like he could hear me at all but he didn’t fight me when I pulled him closer. “I have a drink for you.”

“Milk.” Milo was blinking at me funny but let me ease him back down to the bed again. “Hungry.”

“I can fix that, baby.” As he settled against me, I pushed the band down and moved him to my chest. I usually wore it to bed to make sure I wouldn’t leak on the mattress, but as Milo wrapped his lips around my nipple and closed his eyes, I realized that might have to change.

He definitely wasn’t awake, but he settled in and quickly drained one side before I repositioned him on the other nipple. He’d been hungry all right, but it made me question if he was eating enough. Had he just been dreaming about food?

As good as it felt to cuddle against him and to feel him nursing, I must’ve gone back to sleep too because the alarm going off was the next thing that hit me.

It wasn’t until I reached out to turn off the alarm that I realized I was on my back and Milo was stretched out over me, trapping me against the bed. “Wake up, baby.”

Grumbling, Milo pouted and shook his head, looking slightly more awake but not happy about it. “No.”

“Yes.” Chuckling, I kissed his head and shifted him over just enough for his lips to find a nice distraction.

He made a low hum as he nuzzled against me and wrapped his lips around my nipple. Usually, I woke up aching and uncomfortable, but after feeding Milo in the middle of the night, I felt amazing. There was no tension and the immediate feeling of frustration wasn’t there either. The only thing I could feel was the warmth from the letdown and the incredible sensations I only got from Milo.

He seemed to be almost hypnotized as he drank for several minutes, but I could feel the point when Milo’s brain started to wake up. Something about the way he was sucking changed and his hands came up to pet my chest, barely stroking his fingers against me. “Good boy.”

We didn’t have time for milk and grown-up play because I had to get him and his clothes back to his house before work, but he rocked against me as he got his wake-up snack and his body came to life. “I like waking up with you.”

Making that clear right off the bat, even if I was the pain in the ass who’d just shown up at his work last night, seemed like a good idea. I didn’t want there to be any questions in his head about if he was wanted or if he was intruding. Milo hadn’t seemed to be the second-guessing worrier type, but he was waking up in my bed in a diaper, so I didn’t want to start any stressful habits.

“I liked taking care of you last night and I’m very glad you agreed to come home with me.” His quiet giggle made me smile. “I was very subtle, I know, but I appreciate you reading the room and understanding that under my hints, I wanted to be with you again.”

And I got more giggles.

“I’m not always clear, but you were amazing at looking at my signs and realizing what would make me feel special.” He thought my dryly delivered ridiculousness was hilarious and I made a mental note to make my attempts at humor before his brain fully woke up for the day.

“You even volunteered to come home with me so I didn’t have to ask.” That seemed to be what broke him because he started shaking with barely suppressed laughter but he couldn’t do three things at once.

Drinking, holding back laughter, and holding his bladder were just too much and he lost all three. I only knew about the last one, though, because he sucked in a breath, swallowing milk wrong, and nearly died.

Eventually the coughing stopped but that might’ve been because I threatened him. “I’m going to tell Dally exactly how you died if you’re not careful. I expect you to breathe.”
