“Nope.” Hadley looks down at the baby in her arms. “This is Harley.” Then she glances over at me. “And David is in his daddy’s arms.”

“Jesus,” Kyra grumbles. “Why don’t you just hang kick-me signs on their backs?” She takes David from me and cuddles him against her chest while mumbling to herself. “Hopefully, they’re giants like their dad, or these poor boys will be getting their asses kicked daily.”

After my sister-in-law cuddles both babies, she leaves and lets my brothers come in one at a time to see the boys. The hospital only allows one visitor at a time, and it takes a few hours for most of them to make it through. When my wife begins to droop, I put an end to the visits.

“I’m sorry,” Hadley apologizes.

“You don’t have anything to be sorry for.” I kiss her forehead and reach for my son. “Rest. I’ll take care of everything.”

“I know.”

Three days later, I take my family home from the hospital and the real fun begins.

HADLEY - TEN YEARS LATER

I stare down at the little plastic stick in my hand and groan. My husband is going to flip his shit. After two sets of twins in four years, he put his foot down and said no more children. At the time, I totally agreed with that decision. We have two identical boys, two fraternal girls, and life is good.

The pregnancy test in my hand says Karma wasn’t completely finished with my husband. “Mom, Harley won’t load the dishwasher.” My daughter’s voice echoes through the door.

I tuck the little stick under the sink and open the door to face my monsters. “You do your chores and don’t worry about Harley doing his.” I send Marilyn, my oldest daughter on her way before heading off to look for my oldest son, our troublemaker.

I keep my secret to myself until the kids are tucked into bed. “So,” I sit on the sofa next to Cash and lay my head on his shoulder, “I think we should have another baby.”

He reaches for the remote and turns off the television. “What?”

“I’d like to have another baby,” I tell him, trying to see how he feels about it. I’m not sure what I’ll do if he vehemently protests having another baby.

“It was that time in the shower, wasn’t it?” He already knows. “I knew Karma had a few more tricks up her sleeve.” He reaches around to pull me into his arms. “You and the kids are the best things that ever happened to me.” He kisses my nose. “I’d have a hundred kids if that makes you happy.” Intense relief overtakes me. It will all be okay. “I’ll love these two babies as much as I love the rest of you.”

“I love you, too. So much.” He pulls me close and kisses me until I forget everything else.

A while later, we’re lying in bed, and I take his hand and lace our fingers together. “We don’t know it’s twins,” I tell him. “I just did a home test this morning. I haven’t even been to the doctor.”

“Come on.” He laughs. “We’ve been through this twice. No doubt about it. There are two boys in there.”

It seems Karma had one more surprise for my husband. Six months later, I give birth to triplets. Two girls and one boy. They are small but absolutely perfect. It’s the first time my husband passes out in a delivery.
