“I’ll see you soon?” he asked.

“Soon.”

I watched him ride off with Rogue, and it was a long time before I started walking again.

Everything had felt so right with his mouth on mine and his body against me. I was in no shape for a relationship, but I was going to keep my promise to him. It wasn’t like anything between us could last long. This wasn’t like Rhys and TJ. Carlo wasn’t going to stay on after his family solved the problem he’d created. Would I ever be sane again after he left?

CARLO

I didn’t see or hear from Blade the next day, but I figured it might take him a while to decide to come see me again. I considered asking Rogue for his phone number but decided I would be patient. From what I could find out from my brother, it didn’t look like I would be leaving the ranch anytime soon.

When two more days passed and I still hadn’t seen him, I decided to ask Rogue. But when I went out to the barn, Rogue wasn’t anywhere around. In fact, the only person there was Rhys.

“Has Rogue been out here this morning?” I knew how early most of them got up, so it seemed likely he’d already come by the barn and headed out somewhere else.

“No, he’s busy trying to make Ghost stay in bed.”

“Wow. Bold of him to just announce that to everyone.”

Rhys rolled his eyes. “Ghost is sick. He’s running a fever, but he insists that he’s fine to continue working like usual. It’s the same with Grant. I think they both have the flu.”

Shit. I paused for a moment, pondering whether I had any oncoming symptoms, but I felt perfectly fine. I was rarely ever sick.

“Do they need anything?” I asked.

“No. They would tell you they’re perfectly fine. Jacob and Rogue are taking care of them, which of course makes them even more cranky.”

“I bet. Is TJ okay?”

“Yeah, he’s fine. At least so far. I don’t even want to think about what it would be like to deal with him if he were sick.”

I smiled. That was the first time Rhys had said something moderately friendly to me. “Yeah, I don’t think I’d want to deal with that either.”

“Just call Rogue if you need to ask him something. It wouldn’t happen to have to do with Blade with it.”

I narrowed my eyes. “He told you?”

“We’re twins. I knew he was keeping a secret.”

“Of course you did.”

I stepped out of the barn to make my call. Even if Rhys knew there was something between me and Blade, I didn’t need him hearing any of the details of this phone call.

Rogue answered the phone just when I thought it would go to voicemail. His voice sounded scratchy. “Don’t tell me you’re sick too?”

“No. I feel fine. I just fell back asleep since my man kept me up all night with his coughing.”

“That sounds fun.”

He huffed. “You have no idea.”

“I was wondering if you’d heard from Blade.”

“No. I’ve tried to call, and I’ve texted him, but he hasn’t responded. I figured he was in one of his moods. Have you not talked to him either?”

“Not since you found us together.”

“Shit. I hope he’s not sick. Check in with Jacob and see if he’s heard from him.”

“Maybe I should just go out there.”

“Check first.”

I wanted to ignore Rogue, but after I hung up, I called Jacob.

“What’s up?” Jacob asked when he answered.

“I asked Rogue how Blade was doing, and he hasn’t gotten a response from him in a few days. He said to check with you.”

“I haven’t heard anything. Let me ask Grant. He’s right here.”

“What?” I heard Grant’s grumpy as hell voice. Jacob was a saint to put up with him.

“Have you heard from Blade recently?”

“No. I’ve texted and called but no response.”

“You better go check on him,” Jacob said. “He’s not responding to Grant either.”

“Is that Carlo?” Grant asked, saying my name like a curse.

“Yes.”

“Don’t send him. Send Rhys.”

“Rhys is busy trying to do all your work and Rogue’s.”

“Rogue is sick now?”

“No, but Ghost is almost as bad a patient as you, so Rogue’s busy trying to keep him from self-destructing.”

“It’s just a cold.”

“It’s the flu, and you better stay right where you are.”

If I hadn’t been so worried about Blade, I doubted I could have held back my laughter. As it was, it was a damn good thing Grant couldn’t see my face.

“I’m going.”

“Do that and let me know what you find out.”

My heart pounded in my ears as I grabbed a set of keys for one of the ranch trucks. I doubted Grant would want me using it, but I didn’t give a damn. I was too impatient to walk all the way out to Blade’s cabin. I needed to get there as fast as I could, and if Grant didn’t want people taking the trucks, he shouldn’t keep the keys in such an obvious place.
