“Hey, I work. I work hard. I’m working right now.”

“Right.” He raised his brow as I took a huge bite from the Snickers.

When I’d chewed and swallowed, I said, “I’m keeping you safe. That’s my job.”

“Could you be a little quieter while you’re doing it?”

“Are you always this uptight?”

He nodded as I finished chewing a few chips. “Whenever I’m irritated. Yes.”

“Then I guess you’re going to be like this for the rest of the time we’re together.”

“Yes. I will.”

I played a game on my phone and ate my snacks. Every time I rattled the bag of chips, Darren gave me a cutting glance. It only made me eat them louder, crunching as hard as I could. When I’d been silent for as long as I could stand it, I said, “I’ve been thinking about our next move.”

“Our next move is already planned.”

“Not anymore. We’re not following the original itinerary. Not when someone found us at the first hotel.”

“Everything is set up. The hotels have been vetted. That’s the plan we’re following.”

“No.”

“Xavier has this all mapped out. He’s careful. If something were wrong, he would already know.”

“Someone found us. You and I both know it. If they found us at our first hotel, they may know the whole route.”

“We’re not going to risk changing plans at this point.”

“I was hired to do a job, and I’m going to do it. That means I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe, even if I have to tie you up and force you to come with me.”

“The fuck you will.” Darren slammed his hands on the desk and stood up.

I smiled as color rose in his cheeks. He took off his glasses, and I wanted to grab him and kiss him until he gave in and agreed to whatever I said. But part of me wanted him to be the aggressor. I wanted to know what it was like to be pinned underneath him. I wanted to feel the fire I knew was inside him, melting all his ice.

“Not only are we continuing with our plan, but we will be leaving as soon as possible. I’m not staying in this room with you any longer.”

“Hell no. We’re not making a move until I have time to assess whether someone can find us here. I need to know if they’re following us or if they learned our original plans.”

Darren shook his head. “You’re so fucking stubborn,” he yelled as he started to walk to the door.

“What are you doing?”

“If I’m going to have to keep this up, I need some sugar. I’m getting a fucking snack, then I’m coming back here, and we’re going to call Xavier and settle this once and for all.”

“I’m sorry to tell you, but they don’t have fruit-sweetened kale bites in the machines.”

His glare should have ended me.

When he headed for the door again, I blocked his path. “Where do you think you’re going?”

“To the fucking snack machine.” His words were clipped, cold and sharp, but somehow they warmed my body like he’d touched me. I was getting to him. He was close to coming apart. It was the last thing I should be doing. It was distracting. It was against the rules, but it was all I wanted.

“I can walk down the hall by myself.”

“No.”

“Move out of the way.”

I stood my ground. “If you leave the room, I’m just going to follow you.”

“I need a moment away from you, or I’m going to do something drastic.”

“Like what? What’s going to happen here?”

All his ice melted and turned to fire as he launched himself at me. His hands connected with my chest, and he shoved. He was even stronger than I expected. I stumbled back, hitting a wall.

“So you aren’t always so cold and reserved after all, are you? I finally found a way to push your buttons.” He slammed me against the wall, and I thought I might come just like that from the excitement.

He stepped back, and I bit my lip to keep from begging him to come back. I no longer cared who was right about the plan. I needed a good hard fuck, and I was determined to get it.

I reached for him, grabbing his wrists and pulling him toward me. “I’ve had enough.” I wasn’t holding back anymore. “You’re stuck with me whether you like it or not. I know a better idea than eating candy or fighting to work out all this frustration.”

Darren held my gaze for a moment, then he let his focus move down my body until he was staring at the outline of my cock as it pressed against my sweatpants, begging to be freed. He knew what I wanted, and he wanted it too. He was breathing fast, and I was sure his heart was racing as his face grew redder, and he parted his lips.
