Had I been a man of faith, I might have believed the universe protected us, shielded our feelings because it must’ve known that what we felt was something sacred. A secret worth hiding from the prying eyes of an unsympathetic world.
I greeted my buddies, sneaking closer to Kyle gradually. I hadn’t even meant to, yet found myself beside him. Some subconscious desire must’ve been leading me there all along. We stood side by side, arms occasionally touching, as if by accident, but something I could always tell when I looked into his eyes was never an accident.
There were moments where I pretended everyone knew—that we were out and just like every other couple present.
DJ and Maya.
Bentley and Hanna.
DJ had just finished talking about a fundraising team he was organizing for some of the guys at the Wyachet homeless shelter, when Maya mentioned wanting to get together and go see the Christmas lights.
It was the opportunity I’d been waiting for. “Would you guys be interested in heading downtown to see the winter lights at the Botanical Gardens?”
I, of course, had an ulterior motive. Since Kyle and I had discussed past Christmases and broken promises, I had been planning to find a way to get a group together. We couldn’t do something like that on our own without possibly being discovered, or perhaps someone becoming suspicious, but with our mutual friends, it would be a way to be together in public without a chance of being found out.
“That would be wonderful,” Maya said. “We’ll have to check what night would be good. It’d be nice to actually do something this year. Usually we go to the downtown lights, but it’s not exactly spectacular.” She chuckled. “We’ll have dinner beforehand too.”
Dinner too? Yes, that’s perfect. Just perfect.
I couldn’t look at Kyle until we detoured back to casual conversations. When I finally caught his gaze, he winced slightly, just enough to show me he thought I was up to no good.
And was I ever.
“Sly motherfucker,” Kyle said as soon as I entered the house. Not for the first time, he’d beaten me there. Still in his Santa cap, he attacked me against the front door, lips forcing up against mine. With every kiss, I could feel his appreciation for convincing the others to go on an outing with us, to give us a special moment in public. Taking his arms, I pulled him closer as his tongue slid across mine, a reward for my sneaky plot. Our lips smacked before parting.
“That was a little too sweet,” he said. “Maybe annoyingly so.”
“Annoyingly sweet? Is that what I am?”
“Sometimes. But you’re lucky I like annoyingly sweet.”
He pushed against me, and I started to step back, not realizing his heel was behind mine, making me stumble backward. His arms were right there to brace me, but I pulled him back until we were lying against the stairs.
“Fuck,” I said, my hip taking the brunt of the fall.
“What the hell?”
And then I couldn’t stop laughing.
“Yeah, ever the annoyingly sweet klutz.” He laughed with me before kissing me again.
We were still smiling and giggling, but only for a few moments, since as we continued working up some heat, the mood shifted to deadly serious as we both became filled with that familiar determination. We tugged at one another’s clothes as we made out. The stairs were perhaps the most uncomfortable place for us to be doing this, but it was something I could distract myself from as I worked to tear Kyle out of his clothes. He undid my fly, and we pulled my pants down.
He growled. “I want to be inside you, James.”
“I want it too,” I said, even though my body was trembling.
The more we’d done, the more curious I’d become about having him like that. Up until then, it hadn’t even come up, as if he was giving me time to adjust to how new this all was. It wasn’t something I thought I would ever want…until I knew the feeling of Kyle’s body against mine. And now I knew I could trust him with all of me.
“Would you prefer a condom?” he asked me. “I just got tested at my doc’s last week.”
“I’ve been tested too. Had to because of…” I didn’t want to even say her name, not when we were having such a good time.
“I just want to make sure you feel safe.”
“I feel safe with you, Kyle.”
He snickered. “Sorry. I’m not laughing at you. I just…I’m glad you said that, because the thought of having my cum inside you drives me crazy.”
Why did that excite me so much too?
Why did it seem like his cum pushing up within me was as close as I needed him to be?
“Do we need lube or something?” I asked, genuinely oblivious to what I needed to make this happen.
