“The lawyers say it could happen any time,” says Natalie, her tone soothing. “They’re just stalling for time, losing papers, not answering phones, stuff like that.”

“I know!” Faith seems more frustrated with herself than anything at this point. She draws a sharp breath, then lets it out slowly. “Kaylee, is there anything else we can get you?”

I look around at the shelves. “A book that doesn’t involve aliens?”

Natalie's laugh is rich and bright. “Are you sure, because I’ve got some really good alien romance. Living with three guys is pretty much like staring in a romance novel anyway, so I don’t have to fantasize much, but even Animal, Badass and Quickshot can’t make their junk spin on command. Or have the little wiggly bits at the end that make you come instantly.” She cuts an amused glance to Faith “For some reason, almost all of our books are menage, but if you want one on one stuff we probably have it.”

“Um… menage sounds good…”

Faith grins. “We have lots of biker romance, too, but maybe you’ve had enough of that? It’s not very realistic, but it’s a heck of a lot of fun to read.”

“Honestly, I think I’m too nervous to enjoy a book right now, but thanks. Believe it or not, my life was pretty boring right up a few days ago. Can you believe I was wishing for something, anything exciting to happen to me? Now I'm on the run from the police, dodging a killer and hoping that I haven't somehow started a war between the Mafia and the Screaming Eagles without even trying.”

“Unbelievable,” Faith replies dryly. “Let me know when a guy ruling a mall from Santa’s throne tries to kill you.”

What the heck is her story? Or Natalie's for that matter. Were they as wild as mine, because they don’t seem super impressed.

“Can I ask you guys something? Do your guys ever get jealous?”

“What do you mean?” asks Natalie.

“I mean, they have to share you. How do you make sure everyone's happy? Do you schedule time slots? Do you have separate bedrooms, or just share one big bedroom? I've never met guys who'd happily share with one another, never mind three sharing at once. Not that I need to know personally, of course.”

Natalie chuckles. “Do you want to?”

I grab another cookie. “No. I mean, I don’t think so. They've been so good to me, but eventually this part has to end, right? How do I introduce them to my parents? 'Hi, Mom and Dad, these are the three MC club members that I've fallen in love with.' They would flip.” I laugh briefly at the image, but then frown, because I’d happily deal with all of that awkwardness if it meant we all make it out alive and I can hug them again and let them know that I’m safe.

“I think,” Faith says as she runs her fingers along the top of the books on the shelf beside us, “that if you end up with bikers, you'll find that there is no one answer. They live every moment from one to the next. What’s important to them is the club, and the safety of their families. If they choose you for their old lady, they're yours for life. Just like you're theirs. So if you're going to make that choice, make sure that you're sure. Because they will always be there.”

That sounds both amazing and terrifying at the same time.

“Listen.” I start to pull myself out of the chair, no matter how comfortable it is. “Maybe it would be better if I just found my own spot to hide. That way nobody would—”

“Sit your ass down, before I knock it right back down into that chair,” says Faith in absolutely no uncertain terms. She goes behind the counter and pulls out a handgun, placing it very visibly in front of her. “Now eat your cookies and read a fucking book.”

“I just wanted more coffee! I wasn’t going anywhere!”

“Damn straight you weren’t. Look, I like you, Kaylee. If you’re still around, you’re welcome to come by with your men for Easter, but right now, you could be the difference between my little girl growing up with all her fathers and grandfather… or not.” On cue, a cry comes from a baby monitor I hadn’t even noticed on the counter. “Keep an eye on her, Nat. I have to go get Lotte.”

Natalie smiles. With blue eyes and long blonde hair, she seems so sweet.

“So how did you end up with your guys?” I ask.

“Oh, they bought me.”

Cookie crumbs stick in my throat and I fold over in a coughing fit. “Excuse me? Bought you?”

“Yeah, I was pretty expensive, too.” She leans in conspiratorially. “All these books? It doesn’t compare to the real thing. Have they done you at the same time yet? Like not in a row, but together?”
