There were plenty of nicer places I could’ve stayed in town. Hell, there was a nice hotel that was supposedly haunted that the old me would’ve jumped at. But I was haunted enough these days.

A motel with peeling wallpaper and scratchy sheets was what I got.

To his credit, Colby didn’t say a word about my accommodations.

My nerve endings were still singing from the vibration of the bike, from having my arms around Colby’s warm, strong body. I felt alive for the first time in over a year. It was uncomfortable.

“I’d offer you something to eat,” I muttered once I’d unlocked the door. “But this is all I’ve got.” I waved to the bottle of whisky that was sitting on the bedside table.

My scant amount of clothes were folded neatly in a duffel bag.

“I’m kind of living Sam and Dean style,” I explained as he glanced around the room, which I’d thankfully kept clean. “You know, cheap motels, bad takeout … no hunting demons, though,” I added, trying for a joke.

It didn’t land since it was a little too close to the truth. My demons did haunt me. Hence the running.

Colby didn’t speak, he just leaned against the closed door, staring at me.

It was infuriating. I’d always expected him to find me. And I’d known it was only a matter of time before I went back to Garnett if he didn’t. I’d been a shitty friend and worse godmother. And I wasn’t far gone enough to completely destroy all of my friendships.

I’d spent my free time—of which I’d had a lot—thinking about what it would look like when Colby saw me again. I figured he’d be pissed. I’d snuck out right after we’d had sex, after all. I assumed he’d have a whole bunch of questions and commands.

Back at the bar, he’d surprised me. Caught me off guard. And he was continuing to do that with his quiet staring.

It didn’t help that the past almost two years had been good to him. Great to him, to be honest. He had a shadow of stubble over his angular jaw, making him look older and more rugged. His hair was longer than it had been before, messily falling against his eyebrows. And he’d gained muscle. Not a whole bunch, but his shoulders were definitely broader, biceps were definitely bigger, and he had that sinewy thing going on with his forearms.

I was into all of that.

And something simpler… I’d missed him.

“I had plans, you know,” I blurted. “I was on a mission. I was going to lure in men who hurt women. Punish them. Ollie was helping.”

She wasn’t exactly supportive, considering the danger involved in such things, but she also didn’t try to stop me or rat me out. She was a good friend. And she had the ability to constantly track me and my phone, telling me she’d send the Calvary in if she didn’t hear from me regularly.

“I know you had plans,” Colby said calmly. “I know you.”

I laughed without humor. “Well, that makes one of us.”

Colby scowled at my words. He wasn’t into my self-deprecation, obviously.

“Since I’ve been running around the country all this time, do you know how many men I’ve punished?” I asked him. “None,” I said without waiting for him to reply. “My plans of being a badass bitch avenging angel went out the window when faced with the reality of it all.” I looked at my feet. “I have discovered that I’m all talk and no action. I’m weak.”

Colby was done at this point, communicating that by pushing off the door, crossing the distance between us and grasping onto my neck harder than he ever had before. “I’m not listening to this shit.”

I glared at him, my heart thundering in my chest. “What are you gonna do? Try and talk me out of this?”

“No,” he stared at my lips. “Gonna fuck you out of it.”

I barely had time to digest this because Colby pulled on my neck, and our mouths crashed together.

I planned on fighting him, I really did. This was way too complicated, and I had way too many demons battling for my attention.

But Colby’s lips probed mine open. Not softly. With none of the tenderness from earlier.

No, he was mad. Furious.

And so was I. So I kissed him back with all of my fury. His hand tangled in my hair while another found my ass, forcing our bodies together.

My hands found their way between us, desperate to find the skin of his abs underneath his tee.

He growled into my mouth as I raked my nails down the hard muscle and then down farther, working at his belt with desperation.

We were both animals, wild and desperate to touch each other, mark each other.

Colby let out a rough gasp when I fastened my hands around his bulging, rock hard cock. I smiled against his mouth, satisfied with the power I was holding in my hand but also desperate to have him inside me.
