“My day did get better,” she pointed out.

“Unfortunately, tomorrow will not be a good day,” Garrett assured her.

Chapter Three

“Daddy? I’m not tired at all. We should just keep driving.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Kitten.”

“Why not? We could keep going until we hit Las Vegas! They have magicians there. We could see a show!” Lark suggested, bouncing in her seat.

“I don’t think we can get there before all the shows are finished, Little girl.”

“You could drive real fast. You could turn on the flashing lights and people would get out of your way,” Lark suggested.

“No, Lark. Those are for emergencies.”

“This is kind of an emergency. I really want to see a magic show,” she pleaded. When Wyatt didn’t cave, she flounced back in her seat and glimpsed the large stain on her usually immaculate suit.

“Did you see what happened to my clothes? That was really mean of him to splash me,” she said sadly. “He didn’t even say he was sorry. He just kept driving. I think he had a smile on his face.”

“I’m sure he felt bad, Kitten.”

“I doubt it. Maybe he’s a serial splasher! You could arrest him. I’ll take off my skirt really carefully and you can admit it into evidence,” she suggested, twisting around to unbutton her skirt.

When his hand gathered hers to stop her from taking off her clothes, Lark looked at him in exasperation. “What?”

“Baby girl, you can’t take your clothes off until we get home. Then, I’ll help you.”

“Oh, that’s right. You’re the Daddy. You help me with all sorts of things,” Lark said, turning her hand to hold his. “I love you, Daddy.”

“I love you too, Kitten, even when you’re sloshed,” Wyatt assured her.

“I’m perfectly fine. You could even give me one of those things to blow into and it would register that I’m totally sober. I’ve always wanted to try that. Do you have one?”

“I’m afraid I used my last one earlier today and haven’t restocked.”

“Shoot! I wanted to show you I could have had another three drinks at least.”

“You’re way past sober, Kitten. Do you remember walking out to the car?”

“I just let you help me because you’re sexy and it’s fun to hold on to you. You have just as many muscles as Davis does. I’ll tell all my friends tomorrow. You could take your shirt off and show them—you know, like a visual aid,” Lark added.

“I think my clothes will remain on, Little girl. I’ll just be a mystery to your friends,” Wyatt suggested.

“Ooo! That’s a good idea. Like a secret, sexy agent. Only I will know. It’s okay. I can be cool,” Lark assured him, sitting back and whistling casually.

“No one will ever suspect.”

“I know. I’m really good at secrets. I wouldn’t tell anyone that someone asked Tori out on a date last week. That wouldn’t be okay at all to share.”

“No. I bet she told you that in confidence.”

“And swore us all to secrecy. I’d never betray her,” Lark said, crossing the fingers of her free hand over her chest.

They drove for a few minutes, getting closer to their house. Suddenly, Lark turned and looked at him. “Hey! I told you Tori’s secret. I’m not supposed to do that. I’m a horrible friend.”

Big tears welled in her eyes and tumbled down her cheeks. “She’ll never forgive me.”

Wyatt squeezed her hand. “Kitten, you’re supposed to tell your Daddy everything. It’s okay to tell me.”

“No! She specifically told us all not to tell our Daddies,” Lark wailed.

“Does this guy come in often?” Wyatt asked.

“He only came in three times. Sue said he had out-of-state license plates on his car.”

“Sue followed him out into the parking lot?” Wyatt asked in a sharper tone.

“Of course, she was making sure Tori was safe,” Lark said, affronted that Wyatt wouldn’t know that the Littles took care of each other.

“I think we need a refresher course in safety,” Wyatt stated firmly as he pulled into the driveway.

“That would be fun. I bet we could get matching T-shirts.”

Lark watched the garage door roll up before turning to Wyatt. “We’re at home already?”

“We are.”

“You’re fast. We could have so made it to Las Vegas.”

“No sirens tonight, Kitten.”

“Fine.” She flounced back against her seat. “I never get to have fun.”

“I think you’ve had enough fun tonight.” Wyatt opened his door and got out.

His serious tone registered through the fog filling her brain. As he helped her out of the car, she asked, “Am I in trouble?”

“With a capital T. There would be an exclamation point after it, but you stayed put with your friends and didn’t drive.”

“That would be stupid,” she said.

The moment that final letter of that word slipped from her mouth, Lark felt a wave of sickness flow over her. Clapping her hand over her mouth, she darted around Wyatt and flew inside the house.
