He stroked his fingers through her hair and cupped the back of her head. “I’m going to kiss you again, Cherry. Stop me if I’m going too fast.”
Eager to experience Davis’s skilled kisses once again, Sue leaned forward and pressed her lips to his. That hand behind her head held her steady as Davis explored her mouth. Wrapping her arms around his neck, Sue squirmed closer to his body and froze at the feel of his cock stiffening against her.
Davis’s free hand closed over her thigh, pinning her in place. His kisses deepened and demanded her full attention. Faced with his undeniable attraction to her, all the self-doubts floating around in her mind evaporated. Sue abandoned herself to desire.
When Davis finally lifted his mouth, they were both breathing heavily. His gaze held hers, not letting Sue look away.
“You, Little girl, are the best thing that ever walked through my door.”
“Better than…cupcakes?” Sue blurted the first yummy thing that popped into her mind.
“Even better than Black Forest treats. You are simply the cherry on top. I plan to keep you,” he warned.
“I think I’d like that,” she dared to admit.
“I’ll make sure of it.” Davis drew her close and held her pressed tightly to his powerful chest for a few long seconds before relaxing his arms. “You are temptation incarnate. Go sit in your chair or we’ll never eat.”
Laughing, Sue slid off his lap, exposing the length of her thighs accidentally when the borrowed T-shirt slid up her legs as she moved. “Oops.”
Davis put a hand over his eyes to keep himself from temptation. She couldn’t help giggling at him. When they were both back in their former spots, she referred to the puzzle as he restarted the burner.
Sue was surprised how easily they talked while he tossed a salad as the salmon seared and a loaf of rosemary focaccia toasted in the oven. She watched him fill two plates with a generous helping of everything as it finished cooking. Breathing a sigh of relief that she wouldn’t have to be self-conscious about the portion she took, Sue relaxed. Davis made everything easy.
Except for this puzzle. There was one clue that stumped her completely. “What’s a six-letter word for morello? I don’t even know what that is.”
“Cherry.”
“No. Really, what’s a morello?”
“It’s a kind of cherry.”
“Are you some kind of cherry expert?” she teased.
“I plan to be an expert about a certain Little I’ve nicknamed Cherry,” Davis said as he carried their plates over to the table. His gaze met hers directly. “Eat, Sue. You need energy after your workout.”
Chapter Eight
Waking up the next morning in her own bed, Sue replayed the evening in her mind. The dinner had been delicious—the company even more so. She reached over to pinch herself.
“Ouch! Okay, that was a bad idea,” she announced to the empty room as she rubbed her upper arm.
Hey! I might have a few more muscles. A warm feeling of pride filled her even though she knew a couple of visits to the gym couldn’t make her an amazon. Sue hadn’t done a lot of things just for herself. Moving out of her comfort zone to go to the gym was the best decision she’d made in years.
A picture of Davis formed in her mind. Instant heat kindled in her abdomen. Tall and muscular, he was in incredible shape and so handsome. She would have never thought a man like him could be attracted to her. There was no mistaking his interest in her though.
After dinner, he had taken care of cleaning the kitchen and swapping her clothes into the dryer. To her surprise, he’d set up a board game on the table and they’d played for a couple of hours, talking the entire time, before he declared it was past her bedtime. Davis had driven her back to her car in the parking lot and followed her home, waiting until she was inside and had flashed the lights to let him know she was safe.
As she stretched, smiling again at the memories, her phone buzzed and Sue turned to grab it from the charger on her bedside table. Davis.
“Hi!”
“You up?”
“Being lazy in bed. I have to get up in a few minutes. It sounds like you’re at the gym already,” Sue commented, hearing the clank of weights on the other end of the connection.
“My early morning. I’m getting my workout in as well.”
“You’re a morning person, aren’t you?” she accused playfully.
“Definitely. You sound chipper this morning as well. I would bet money that you are, too.”
“Guilty as charged,” she admitted. “I like mornings.”
“When will I see you today?” Davis asked.
“I get off at four.”
“How are your muscles? Still sore?” he probed.
“Some,” she admitted.
“No weights today. We’ll go swimming. Pack your swimsuit.”
Immediately, all her self-doubts about being seen in a bathing suit flooded her mind. “I’m not much for swimming.”
