“I’m hanging up. Listen to me on your earpiece. So far there’s been little problem,” Joe said.

Cash barely looked down at the screen, instead watching Dev place Mae in the backseat.

“Stay inside the car,” Dev said sternly to Mae. “When you go to the service, you stay with Shanna or Cash the whole time. No more runnin’ like you just did, got it?” Dev asked in just short of an angry yell as he buckled her into the seat.

“You don’t like my shoes?” Mae asked Dev, sounding crestfallen, and completely ignoring the reprimand.

“’Course I like ’em. You both look pretty in your new clothes. I love the curls Aunt Shanna put in y’alls hair. My girls are always beautiful. But you both need to listen to what I’m sayin’ and mind me about stayin’ close and not runnin’ around. Hold Cash’s hand the whole time we’re at the funeral until he puts you back inside this car.” Dev looked back over his shoulder at Cash. The look held uncertainty, and Cash nodded, giving Dev some visual relief. “Abi, you hear me too?”

“Don’t have to tell me twice,” she drawled or at least it sounded like that. If the situation weren’t so dangerous, he’d probably have smiled at the care and love Dev used with his girls.

Dev shut the door carefully and went to Shanna’s window, bending down, talking quietly to her before he cupped the window edge with his hand then turned toward Cash.

This Dev wasn’t the guy who whispered sweet words into his hair while holding him until he fell asleep. But he liked all the layers of his biker. He was confident, decisive, and determined. Capable of eating a live rattlesnake for breakfast.

“Keep ’em with you the whole time,” Dev said. Cash nodded, and Dev redirected his gait, heading back through the long line of brothers to the front of the line.

=♥=

Goddamn. This show of brute strength and power plays pissed Dev the fuck off.

On every single level, he was ready to spit with as angry as he was. There were just enough pervs in this biker world that he shouldn’t have let the girls come to the funeral at all. He didn’t know who to trust. He’d be on high alert until they were safely back in north Fort Worth again.

Even Cash’s presence didn’t help ease the tension flowing through his veins, and Cash always helped calm his shit down. He took long strides back to the lead spot while wishing he could kick his bike over and throw himself down on the ground in a complete tantrum fit.

These stupid bitches had him hurting Mae’s feelings. Her little bottom lip stuck out, fighting back tears over his anger. His heart couldn’t take her sadness. He was already riding a thin line between what he wanted and what was expected of him. Mae had tipped his scale right over.

Why the fuck was he in a club that he never wanted his children to be a part of? A fucking place that he didn’t trust so thoroughly that now he was afraid of what might happen to his children if they weren’t watched all the damn time.

Goddamn he was pissed off. He punched a fist through the air then cut his gaze back to Cash who came very close to looking like the law enforcement agent he was as he scanned the area for a perceived threat.

That was if an agent looked sinfully handsome in his dark clothes, pretty hair, perfect lips and aviators. Couple that with the sexy pose leaning against his fancy sports car, hands stuck in his slacks pockets, ankles crossed with those fine leather shoes he wore.

Instead of spending the last few days together snuggled up at home, he’d been dicking around with these guys.

He’d become a fucking party host for the demons of hell. Dev sneered as he cast a glance at Diesel.

“What’s goin’ on?” Diesel asked carefully when Dev came to stand in front of him.

It was a loaded fucking question. One Dev would never be able to answer aloud. The narc should fucking know that.

The rumble of pipes caught his attention, taking his answer and his gaze in the direction of a lone biker pulling into the clubhouse parking lot. Every bit of frustration vanished as he saw his best friend riding to the front of the line. Keyes was a showman while on his bike and ran the length of the brothers before coming straight to a stop in front of Dev.

Keyes cut the engine, tossed the kickstand in place, and dismounted, all in the fluid way the giant had. He walked to Dev, giving their personalized dap slap before drawing Dev into a hug. “Figured you needed a second.”

“You sure you’re good with bein’ here?” Dev asked, wrapping his arms around his brother. His heart almost collapsed with how badly he’d needed Keyes by his side today.
