Sometimes she felt bad for him; that his life was going downhill fast. He used to be so pumped, so confident in his abilities. But since he lost his job he’d climbed into a bottle and hasn’t found his way out since.

In the beginning she’d believed him, that he was going to get back on top soon, but as the prospects got drier and drier and he got more fond of gin, she decided to take her life in hand. If she’d waited on him to make his big comeback she’d have starved to death by now.

She didn’t care what the neighbors thought, their high morals weren’t going to pay her bills and they sure as hell wasn’t putting food on the table. No one had anything to offer except kind words, but you can’t eat those no matter how good they may make you feel for a minute or two.

She put down the eyelash wand and turned to him on the bed. “Come on don’t sulk, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings but you know it doesn’t make sense to have a kid right now. Why don’t we wait until we get back on our feet?”

“You promise?” His face lit up like a Christmas tree and she walked over to kiss his head. Sometimes she remembered the way things were and it broke her heart. She didn’t mean to be a bitch, but she was so angry at him; angry enough that she did the things she did to hurt him. “Of course!”

She walked over to the closet and pulled the hot pink wrap around dress she planned to wear to work this evening from the old wire hanger. Not that it mattered much what she wore since it would be off ten seconds after she walked through the door.

The club wasn’t as bad as everyone made out, not unless you wanted it to be. They had strict rules about mingling with the clientele or going further than a lap dance. At least that’s what they claimed when they hired you. But it hadn’t taken her long to realize that they were full of shit.

The owner slash manager is nothing more than a glorified pimp who finds ways to get a cut if any of the girls find a sugar daddy. But Melissa had been smart. From the moment she’d found her mark she’d set about putting her plans in play.

She’d rebuffed the lawyer with the Rolex on his wrist while at the club, all the while gathering all the information about him that she could. No one would’ve guessed what she was up to, since she never had a kind word for him when talking to the other girls, and she made damn sure Don never knew her real interest in him.

He was a middle aged homely thing with more money than sense, an easy mark that’d taken one look at her, her first week there and fallen hard. She’d rebuffed him with the news that she was married and wasn’t looking for anything more.

No matter how many hundred-dollar bills he threw at her, she didn’t give in; because she had better plans, bigger plans for Mr. Don Wilson Attorney At Law.

About a month after she started working at the club, she’d found herself on the same street as his office sitting in the little diner where she’d learned he liked to have lunch.

When he walked in and saw her sitting at the table across from the one he usually sat at, he thought it was his lucky day. He could have no idea that the whole thing had been staged. Melissa never looked up from her phone after she’d seen him walk through the door.

The burger and fries she’d ordered sat forgotten in front of her on the table as she looked at the phone with a worried look. She saw his shadow come across her table in the afternoon sun and looked up as if only now realizing that he was there.

“You, what are you doing here?” She looked around as if afraid and pretended to slide out of the booth where she’d been sitting.

“No-no don’t leave, I work around here, I eat at this place all the time you can ask the waitress; I’m not stalking you I swear.”

“Oh, sorry, I’m not in a good mood, didn’t mean to snap at you.” She went back to looking at her phone and he said the words she’d been waiting to hear. “You look upset, is there anything I can help with? I’m a good listener you know.”

She gave him a disbelieving look and shrugged before putting her phone away in her purse. “No, you can’t help, unless you can find my husband a better job, or find me a cheaper place to live.” She buried her face in her hand with a deep sigh.
