After getting myself to calm down, I grumbled the whole time I did my shopping. The longer I thought about it, the more pissed and on edge I got, and the more part of me felt guilty for things I had no control over—for my family’s shady past. Hell, if I were Big Daddy, I might hate me too.
But Brody didn’t.
I was at the register, checking out, when the cashier said, “So…you finally had a showdown with Big Daddy, huh?”
What the hell? It was fifteen fucking minutes ago. How the hell did he know?
“Cameras.” He pointed to the door. “Got ’em in the parking lot too. Georgie saw you guys out there and told Ewing. He went up and watched on the monitors. Said it looked heated. Couldn’t figure out what you said, o’course.”
“He wanted to welcome me to the neighborhood,” I lied. “Said he was baking me an apple pie and invited me over.”
The guy paused. His brows pulled together, and then he chuckled. “You almost got me for a second, but we all know that Mitchells and O’Ralleys are like oil and water. You’re never going to get along.”
I wished I could tell him how well I got along with Brody’s dick in my mouth, but of course I didn’t. I paid, grabbed my shit, and got my ass back to Mitchell Creek, where it was safe.
“What’s wrong?” Isaac asked when I got home. He was sitting at the table, drinking a smoothie.
“I just ran into Big Daddy.”
“Oh shit.”
“Oh shit is right.”
“He doesn’t know, right? About Walker and Brody spending time with us?”
“No.” I waved off his concern. “Can you imagine if he knew I was sleeping with Brody and you were friends with Walker?”
“Nope, can’t imagine. So, what is the plan for today? What do we need to do for work?” He took a drink of his smoothie and looked away from me.
“You’re being weird.”
“I’m not being weird. You’re being weird—you and your Brody orgasm brain. Stop projecting.”
“Huh?” I frowned. “I don’t even know what that means. And it’s Saturday, and I’m losing my fucking mind, so we’re not working. We’re…hell, I don’t know. We’re going to Atlanta for the night.”
Like I figured it would, that made Isaac perk up. “Really?”
“Yeah. I need to get away.” I wondered if Brody would be willing to go, not that it should matter. I didn’t need him to go out.
“What about Brody?”
“What about him?” Damn it. He was always in my head. Before Isaac could reply, my cell rang. I knew who it was without looking. Still, I tugged it out of my pocket, and sure enough, Country Boy flashed across the screen.
“How’s it going, No Good Mitchell?”
I wasn’t sure if I should tell him I ran into Big Daddy. Part of me wanted to, but I didn’t want to cause any drama between them. If Big Daddy wanted him to know, he would say something himself, otherwise Brody couldn’t even mention it to him without Big Daddy knowing I told him, so I decided to wait. “I really hate this fucking feud,” is what I landed on.
“Um…okay? Where did that come from?”
“Sorry. I’m on edge. I just…really need a break.” Forget that a moment ago I was thinking I didn’t need Brody to go to Atlanta. I didn’t, but I wanted him to. “You and Walker wanna get out of here tonight with me and Isaac?”
He paused for a moment. “What do you mean?”
“Atlanta? I can take you to your first gay bar.”
“Pfft. I went to a gay bar in college, city boy. This ain’t my first rodeo.”
“Okay, I can’t believe you said that, and fine, you might have gone before, but you haven’t really experienced a gay bar until you’ve been there with me and Isaac. Unless…well, unless you can’t hang.” I figured he wanted to go, but I also knew that would get to him.
“Oh, fuck you. You know I can hang. I’ll get Walker. We country boys will show you city boys how to have a good time.”
I smiled, feeling a little better. “I’m counting on it, cowboy.”
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Brody
A wide-eyed Walker ogled the neon-pink Flirt sign over the bar. He looked at it as though it was something sacred as he walked through a cloud of smoke from a few guys vaping nearby. The bouncer chatted with the smokers before turning to us and perking up. Isaac and Cohen approached, greeting him with all their wit and charm, reminding me how familiar they were with this world, one that seemed so far removed from what I was used to. I assumed we would have to show the bouncer our IDs, but he waved us in, and as we crossed the threshold, it really dawned on me that we were heading into a gay bar with the enemy.
